Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Possible reasons for merger?

It is not at all clear to me what are the possible reasons why Conoco would merge with Oxy? If this rumor is true, then it's really bad and I hope to get out of here before it happens.

Does anyone have any idea how many people could become redundant if that happens? Well surely half would be redundant. Terrible.

Mergers are rare but often acquisitions are labeled as a merger to make it more palatable. Such was the case of Conoco and Phillips which was publicized as the merger of two equals. In fact, however, Phillips purchased Conoco. The ARCO folk ended up in the positions of power and both Conoco and Phillips lost out.

Ask Champ. It’s all about the “balance sheet”...and the barbecue.

An elaborate plan to give Hollub her golden parachute and watch her go bye-bye. Anadarko employees are still protected through the change of control plan and OXY put a change of control plan into place post acquisition. I don't know if this would qualify as a change of control since it would be a merger. Let's make this happen quick!

Possible reason for a merger? LOL. It’s all always about leadership compensation. Announce the merger, the ELT retires with centimillion dollar Golden parachutes, and who cares about anything or anyone else? Is that reason enough for you?

I don't think there is any credibility to this rumor... Why would these two companies want to merge?

Calm down. Both companies are untouchable under the tax laws for two years after merger completion.
By then we will all be unemployed anyway.

Yes, we will all be redundant—just as we are now.
