Supplier Rankings of OEM's, more distance with supple base at Ford (No Surprise)

Suppliers talk, Ford doesn't listen (or care). Widely known that ABF (anybody but Ford) exists for sharing of new technology and Ford Purchasing continues to damage relationships.

Results of the 21st annual North American Automotive OEM - Supplier Working Relations Index® (WRI®) Study released today by Plante Moran show that in spite of the serious challenges facing automakers and their suppliers this past year, four of the six major U.S. and Japanese automakers improved their scores. Two automakers worsened.

The 2021 NA Automotive OEM Buyer – Supplier Working Relations Index shows Toyota and Honda remaining in first and second place overall, with General Motors and Nissan improving significantly, and Ford and FCA/Stellantis dropping significantly.

New this year is a scoring of the six automakers’ purchasing organizations “effectiveness,” that is, how quickly various issues are resolved between the automaker and supplier or their “throughput.” In this ranking, Honda was the top scorer, with Toyota a close second. The others followed the 2021 rankings.

Trust and communication are among the most important factors in Working Relations. This year, Toyota, General Motors, and Nissan all improved somewhat, with Honda holding steady, and Ford and FCA/Stellantis dropping.

The Working Relations Index Study has shown conclusively over the years that the higher and OEM ranks on the Index, the greater the benefits the OEM receives from the supplier. This graph shows how “benefits received” closely tracks “trust & communication.”

One of the specific benefits an automaker receives from its supplier is new innovation and technology. This graph shows the supplier’s willingness to invest in new technology, with the expectation (based on trust) of receiving new business.

The OEM buyer could be considered the most important link in the Working Relations Index score. He or she is the individual that interfaces with the supplier almost daily and has a direct effect on the relationship. The Buyer Characteristics Index (BCI) ranks the OEM’s buyers on a host of key attributes including product knowledge, communication, integrity, and trust. In the graph above, GM ranked number 1, with Toyota and Honda a very close second and third.

Do not allow purchasing to negotiate any pricing the buyer should just oversee the the sale and insure proper payment protocols. The COST ESTIMATOR needs to be the lead in all original placement and changes regarding costs period. Sorry their goes the suit tickets for buyers.

@3yjd+1b0BBSlS those who report are retaliated against. The people getting away with unethical behaviors are very skilled at snowing the management chain and casting dispersions on anyone who questions their behaviors. I have seen people who do report behaviors being the ones who end up getting fired. As a result unethical behaviors go on at Ford for extended periods. They go unchecked until someone in the chain leaves or steps out of line and then the dominos fall. Then you see a group of people suddenly departing for unexplained reasons. The people getting away with behaviors for extended periods are nearly always a person in power.

@3yjd+1b0BBSlS, you actually think the anonymous tip line is anonymous???
L M A O!
Ford HR and management almost always punish the tipper rather than the perp, or, they end up punishing both. Ford does not take kindly to ratting out a a lousy coworker, especially a coworker breaking company policy. Why? Because it almost always shows the ineptitude of the management for either: allowing the behavior and doing nothing about it or not even being aware of it.

I've seen it.

For example, we have people who consistently, and daily, take advantage and break the rules for company m plate test vehicle privileges. Don't sign out, use to haul large personal items, use for personal non company related trips and errands (during company time I might add), cheat FMS for number of allowable overnights. These people think it's their own personal vehicle with company paid gas and insurance! And they get away with it for years! Management knows and doesn't care or does anything. And, even during this whole pandemic time. No one coming into the office the past year, oh but these people come in just to get their company paid vehicle with free gas.

What about the GPS you ask? They unplug it.

@3mot+1b0BBSlS if you have proof of this, all anyone would have to do is place a call to the anonymous Ford Tip Line. There are quite a few people that have lost their jobs because of this behavior. Suppliers also regularly rat out employees that try to shake them down. You say it has been pointed out and is open knowledge, doubt that. Again, if there was even a wiff of that, anyone could report.

Honda and Toyota are not woke...... so benchmarking them is no longer as valuable as it was back when woke morality was NOT the top priority for moral corporations who want to be anti racist and moral.

Funny how different areas work. There is a guy in IT who annually buys multi-million dollars worth of software, hardware and purchased services that are not needed. The IT suppliers love him. They have gifted him him laptops, iPads and iPhones for his children, very expensive li---r for himself and his wife, box seat tickets to the Wings and Tigers games, paid for “education” and “conference” trips for himself and his wife which were really just a gambling trip to Vegas. Those are just the items that people know about.
The guy likes to be the big man on campus and thinks he is above all the rules. I guess he is as he has been getting away with this behavior for many years. More than one person has pointed out that unneeded items were being purchased. Life at Ford.

Ford purchasing is the worst ever. Second worst is PD who is usually in bed with the supplier. Any decent financial analysis has to do battle with all three. So why is purchasing the lead negotiator for the company?

No accident why. Keep treating suppliers badly and the costly challenges will continue at Ford.

It’s no secret that the microchip shortage has wreaked absolute havoc on Ford’s production in recent weeks, as we’ve reported extensively. So far, the automaker has been forced to close every one of its North American plants for at least a week or two, with some idling for multiple weeks and tens of thousands of vehicles being removed from production schedules. The latest data paints an even uglier picture, as it reveals that Ford has been impacted more by the microchip shortage than its crosstown rivals – General Motors and Stellantis.

According to AutoForecast Solutions and reported by Automotive News, Ford has removed a total of 324,616 vehicles from its production schedules in North America so far. However, the remainder of the Detroit Big Three aren’t far behind, as GM has lost 277,966 units to the semiconductor chip shortage, and Stellantis has been forced to cut 252,193 vehicles from its North American production schedule so far.

In terms of individual models, the Ford F-Series once again “leads” the pack, with 109,710 units lost to the crisis thus far. Tens of thousands of chipless units are also piling up in both Detroit and Kentucky, as we’ve reported recently. A number of other Blue Oval models populate the top ten as well, including the Ford Explorer (46,766 units), Ford Edge (37,521), Ford Escape (36,463), and Ford Transit (26,507).

Ford previously stated that it expects to lose roughly half of its anticipated Q2 output to the chip shortage. And despite the fact that chipmakers are ramping up production while government officials seek to pass legislation to vastly increase the domestic production of microchips, most believe that the shortage won’t end for months – or maybe even years. In the meantime, Ford is working to change its supply chain strategy, purchase chips directly from manufacturers, and redesign its vehicle’s components to accept more readily available chips.

There are some real ethical challenges in Ford Purchasing. You would think that this feedback from the supply base would be of interest (or concern) to Ford management. Rather than respond or react, it appears to be a reflection of what Ford leadership expects and what is required to advance in to the upper echelon. Reputations are earned, not just given.

Guess this a warning for suppliers like SK who are looking to make big commitments to Ford in support of their new EV strategy.

Proceed with caution....

Ford is going bankrupt soon. So it is normal that it’s relationship with Suppliers is worsening.
It is the real indication of a struggling company. Ford cannot fool them the way it is fooling walstreet id--ts
