Presidents Excellence Award - Pat on The Back, 2x4 to the face!

Recently received the Presidents award from Exxon for exceptional performance in 2020. To me it actually feels worse receiving this useless paper (no actual financial recognition) than not receiving it at all.

Another terrible idea by Exxon to "create culture" at the company.

They segregate 2% of workforce with this award, and don't actually provide tangible rewards. In the process they disenfranchise the remaining 98% of workers.

Then they ask us the put "Presidents Excellence Award Winner Recipient" in our email signature... The epitomy of a gold star, similar to what children receive in grade school for spelling the word CAT correctly.

Through my career, I have always felt like these awards are consolation for not being promoted. If they really thought I was the ‘cat’s meow,’ they would give me a team and some authority...because that is how this company works.

So yes, awards are bitter sweet. They used to come with a fancy dinner and gift card, which were enjoyable. Not certain why we are bothering, when all we get is one more zoom meeting.

Genius, Exxon and Mobil are now brands, not companies. Exxon Mobil is the parent company, with numerous ExxonMobil subsidiaries. And yes, all that is wrong today is indeed all Exxon, make no mistake about that. ALL Exxon. Proud of that are you? Me? I got me a whole bunch of that tiger money, while the old Exxon hands stood by with their mouths open. No packages for them. Ha!

The distance to travel from award winning employee to the PIP Pit is super short.

This is nothing new in the 'morale' building scheme.

I received a 'Vice President's Award' about 8 years ago – and it had a monetary element.
My section manager told me to take the family out to dinner on the Company AmEx card!
I checked a couple month's later with the section Admin and she confirmed he'd asked about it a couple of times.
Of course, I never used the AmEx for this purpose.
Chills up my spine, that one.

The asking for you to put the 'award' as part of your professional email signature –
is possibly more chilling.

What good is high ranking where they can come back around and get rid of you next year on a whim.

@OP

If you are so upset about this, why not use your feet and go elsewhere. Unless you think that piece of paper is keeping you with the company.

"Presidents Excellence Award", sounds like the Presidents Choice cut when you buy a ribeye or sirloin from the supermarket. Yum

Dear Exxon, you recently gave me an award that practically assures a high ranking and very good exposure to senior management. I wish to trash the company and the award. Mind you, I didn’t refuse the award or say anything at the time, but I have found my courage on this anonymous site!

Oh wait, it will be quite easy to identify me. And I forgot I work for EM, not Exxon. Silly me. Shaggy, it wasn’t me!

Could I be trying to establish a fake narrative to cast doubt on others?

Yeah, I guess some people might be this stupid. Haha

If you are going to make this nonsense up, at least get the name of the company correct. LOL
