The job market is really bad

How disappointed were you looking for a new job? I didn't think it would be this bad. I have a feeling that the market situation is not improving at all. Each new interview is an additional disappointment. Sometimes I get to an interview but that’s where it all ends. I thought it would be much easier to find a new job.

It really depends on skills. There is a strong market for IT, data science and mental health support. Degreed is available to employees and offers skills development.

@1rgh. I too went back. Was an employee for 26 years before being laid off in November. I'm just hoping to leg it out 5 more years in some capacity before I can retire. Have a lot vested in pension and 401k. I will admit that I can blame no one but myself. I put all my eggs in one basket regarding insurance the last 3+ decades and never took time to learn another skill. At 57 years old I feel too old to start over outside of insurance. I'm sure that didn't help my cause when I applied and was rejected at 4 other insurance companies. But again it's all on me. I got too complacent. Luckily I have a place for now and if I can slink on another 5 years until retirement I'll take it.

All you 20 and 30 year olds live and learn by my mistakes. Never get too comfortable, don't be one dimensional in your job skills, and remember every one is replaceable. Every one.

I had to go back. At least for now. Nothing much at all that isn't entry level, food service, or retail. And I am not starting over somewhere else being a phone grunt. Plus many companies around these parts are starting to head back into offices or hybrid. Unemployment ran out and had to get income coming in. I have three kids with school events and sports to pay for. They are not going to go without doing what they like. For now at least I bit the bullet and bent the knee and went back to pretty much my old rile at the same pay work from home. I'm not happy but could be worse I guess. We'll see how things are in 6 months or so and revisit. Regardless do best for you and yours in the moment and see how things change later.

There are lots of opportunities opening up now that the Covid thing is dying down. Lots of work from home positions at that.

If I could post pictures of my linked in inbox I would. Today, I've had 11 recruiters reach out to me and have averaged 5–7 daily since mid last year now that every tech company is going remote.

Please note, I have marketable software engineering skills that are above the trained monkey status of claims. The market for those types of jobs might suck, but that's why I went to college and got a CS degree... Don't have to worry about finding a job if I get laid off.

The prior to posters are lying. Especially the person who said they get 5 – 7 recruiters reaching out to them "daily".

The job market is bad, unless you want to work in hospitality/food. It'll likely remain bad for a long while, too.

BAHAHAHAHA. Disappointing? I wasn’t disappointed at all. Got a new job within 3 weeks of when I started looking, including the time it took to do my three interviews. Looking forward to getting out of this place.
