Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Corporate trolling is now new morale-lifting policy

Anyone familiar with this site must have noticed in the last few weeks an exponential increase in corporate troll activity, corresponding to the outrage generated by the announcement of yet another oversized PIP (disguised layoff).
The method was perfected in Russia; instead of physically censoring the Internet, as China does, Putin opted for troll farms that invade any online discussion to the point of rendering it highly contentious and ultimately irrelevant. Anybody posting something against the regime is insulted, ridiculed and accused of being a traitor working for some sinister foreign power.
Same here: anybody criticizing the dismal leadership of the company and complaining about absurd and harmful decisions, low morale and motivation by fear is branded a whiner and dead weight that will be soon eliminated, as well as probably being in the service of some corporate enemy like the now famous Engine. Those who have lost their jobs are labeled as losers who deserved it and the advice to those still employed is to keep their heads down, shut up, drink the Kool-Aid and be happy with whatever pay or fragment of pension the corporate lords still allow them to get.
This is a good mirror of the way our “leadership” thinks, but it’s just as useless as most things these geniuses decide to do. The next upturn will be nice to watch.

Anyone in the oil field could read between the lines with Exxon’s first “non layoff” layoff. They publicly proved what liars they are and any oilfield executive or VP knows exactly what they did. It was not about what you knew. h––l I knew people that did not know their base job, stayed ranked at the top with no additional non physical contributions but able to keep their job because they slept with the right person. Come on

Had an enlightening conversation recently. Friend of a friend recruits for Big Pharma. He was at a networking conference a while back. Said other corporate recruiters and headhunters were laughing hysterically at how they work sites like this. Said it was like herding sheep into their corral. Making people unhappy with current job, undermining management, pushing people to change jobs, etc. Referred to number of viewers as sheep count. Makes sense. More the turnover, more business for them. Said they even direct clients to these sites to reinforce their thoughts about changing jobs. Said oil and gas was hot now. Who knows.

I know a couple of facts relative to this:

  • Many current employees visit this site from home computers (of course) on a regular basis. They tend to read, but not contribute. This is site is well–known and common water–cooler talk (ha!).
  • My gig–rate for participation here is variable, but my increase in rhetorical skills compensates.

I don’t see any scenario where EM is engaged or even remotely interested in sites such as this one. First, very little of the activity comes from actual employees, and second, any employees coming here are likely already a lost cause. EM needs 8–10% fewer employees by year end than it has today. Everyone is replaceable. Everyone. Why would EM even bother trying to convince employees to stay? They need fewer people and realize the quality of the workforce has declined significantly, making it even easier than ever to find replacements. Let all of the unhappy leave, even if that exceeds 10%. EM will have no problem finding replacements of equal value, using that term loosely.

Corporate Trolls (if it is occurring on this site) has probably adopted the classic sports playbook:

"The Best Defense is a Great Offense"
