This Sun–Times story is heartbreaking. I am truly sad for them. But a house can’t left unoccupied for a year without problems arising. Good lesson to hire a property manager when having an extended absence, even when the absence is unexpected. Another option would have been travel insurance that covers medical evacuation, which could have gotten them home in comfort, even during the pandemic. Or, an internet–connected water leak sensor that can alert to a problem. There are options, when property is being left unoccupied for weeks or months. I truly feel for them, but I don’t understand how leaving one’s house empty for a year should lead to a $250k payout.
