Thread regarding PPG Industries Inc. layoffs

The stores business is a money pit

PPG loses money on the stores business each and every year. They have for at least the last 10+ years. The best thing they could do it to sell the stores to individuals that want to own paint stores and have them become dealers. ALL the money on the Architectural side of PPG comes from National Accounts and Dealers. The stores business is a money pit and needs to finally be put to sleep. Soon you will see that these leaders actually do have a plan. The plan is to make money and no use for anything that is not profitable.

So for the proud PPG defenders above, how are things going now??? Is the town-hall mentioned above still bringing you great wealth... that is if you haven't been cut! Ouch. I decided to leave the company late last year and have gone to the almighty SW. Best decision ever! I'm still highly connected with people via linkedin who are at PPG and the direction of AC is THD > PPG company stores. But like every initiative at PPG over the past 10 years, the THD partnership will be the flavor of the month or year until it doesn't increase sales as it thought it would and then they move onto something else. Don't like hearing this!? Check PPG AC's record for the past 10 years. One failed initiative after another while mid level and senior level mgmt keeps getting bumped around and paid to keep quiet about the numerous failures. It's a clown show but to the many clowns out there it's a great company to work for :) That being said I do feel bad for the overworked, under compensated store employees who keep showing up to work (I was one of them). Look elsewhere! You will be treated (and compensated) much better for your efforts!

Our new so-called "leader" has no industry and zero field experience of any kind, and he seems more interested in his boomer rang hobby than in dealing with the issues in our market. And there are plenty of them. WE are shaking our heads...

A big reason PPG is not successful is who they hire for key positions. JI has zero industry experience. Many zone gm's have zero field experience. And now key markets are being led by people with zero industry and/or zero field experience. Ignorant and incompetent and really poor decision making. Such a joke.

Well since you cannot pay attention let me lay it out for you. Maybe you need to request the slides so you have a better understanding of the strategy. In the slides it called out current state (brick and morter stores) future state (Project BLUE -- better delivery and less physical stores) (Project Arrow -- better delivery from strategically placed locations) .... when I say get out of stores I simply mean out of stores as it is set today... that is exactly what is happening... Look at the Indy market. Do they have as many stores today as they did prior to them being a test location? Nope they closed some of the stores that no longer served the directive. At the end of the day will we close 100% of the store? Probably not for quite some time or maybe never... Will we have more store than we do today? No chance i would say you will see less stores overall and possibly some stores open in new locations but the total stores PPG operates out of will go down. And this is 100% the correct decision. If you take the people out of the equation you would see this makes sense. Does it suck if you are a small store manager or not going to make it long term? yep... but if you were running the business and looked at it from a business side it is the correct decision...

How do you think the stores biz is on the chopping block after the town hall? It’s clear the stores biz is part of the 3x3 strategy and the stores are playing a very big role in the new strategy. If you can’t see that it’s because you don’t want to. Just leave if you’re not happy.

Well after today’s townhall it sounds like this id--t was correct... so please tell me about the financials of AF... rent for stores, vehicles, utilities, store managers, drivers... but hey you obviously are way smarter than anyone else seeing how a Fortune 500 company is following your direction... You clearly are an id..t and have no clue about the financial well-being of the AF business. The stores ARE profitable before corporate allocations which absorb costs from the dealers, national accounts, etc. If they got rid of the stores, they’d lose a ton of business because those costs would then have to be added to the COGS to all distributors.
