Thread regarding PPG Industries Inc. layoffs

PPG Closes stores and layoffs employees

As of today Friday April 10, 2020 PPG has closed over 230 stores and has layoffed its employees. Stores were informed Wednesday and were told they were closing temporarily till things clear up financially. This is not a response to keep its employees safe that they have manning these stores and doing deliveries it is a response to keep their stock up. PPG has chosen it's lowest performing stores in their markets. There have been no layoffs and the corporate offices to anyone's knowledge it has not been mentioned. PPG has not given any bonuses or pay increases to the employees out working the stores on the front line. Let's all be honest this is a move to keep shareholders happy. I pray these workers that now have to go on unemployment and hopefully did not contract the disease working everyday the best of luck as this shows what PPG thinks of their store workers.

As a former retired PPG Ind. employee:
PPG has taken care of me and continue to do so in retirement. PPG was a great Company to work for and so far (after 11 years in retirement) continues to take care of me!

Here in August of 2021 all of the aforementioned (by other reviewers) is still true (and even more intensified)! From the CEO down to regional level, management doesn't care. Regional management can vary greatly. I've had great regional managers and awful ones. Even the great ones eventually aren't able to help not because they don't want to but because they are under the g-n as well. They have no resources to get their job done so how can they provide resources to you at the store level. Stores are chronically understaffed with the weight of corporate, regional, field sales rep, and store falling on the overworked and underpaid store manager. The stores are budgeted to lose money every year! Yes... budgeted to lose money! Isn't the point of a business to make money?! Double the pay and store headcount if you want stores to meet the set goals, expectations, etc. PPG can afford it! It's a joke of a business. A five year old running a lemonade stand likely follows a smarter business model. Even at corporate, low - mid level employees are leaving for better opportunities. If you're a current employee: start your job search. If you're a candidate looking at PPG: keep your search going. PPG isn't the place to be!

PPG loses money on the stores business each and every year. They have for at least the last 10+ years. The best thing they could do it to sell the stores to individuals that want to own paint stores and have them become dealers. ALL the money on the Architectural side of PPG comes from National Accounts and Dealers. The stores business is a money pit and needs to finally be put to sleep. Soon you will see that these leaders actually do have a plan. The plan is to make money and no use for anything that is not profitable.

Well Said. PPG prior chair was an accountant ...... an grew company sales $$ on paper by simply purchasing other paint companys! It worked and now investors know truth! The company is all about smoking mirrors! Huge overhead operation and R&D costs out of control.

Good luck Ex-ADM. The leadership is indeed underwhelming. Jaime has NO industry experience and it shows. Vinny seems more interested in cutting costs than growing the business. Covid or no Covid, we are beyond lean in the field. People are going to get hurt. One or two people leave in a market and it will shut it down. These guys are clueless what the field needs and field leaders are afraid to speak up because they will be singled out. We are going into the shi&&er!

Resigned yesterday, spot on comments Vincent and Jaime are horrible leadership, townhall calls with Vinny are agonizing 30 calls a day! Clearly a clueless, they spent more time preaching social justice on conference calls rather than actual business strategy. PPG will continue to decline under current leadership.

The survey was simple. No questions that would evoke negative responses.

Who is looking forward to the survey? Can it be worse than last year? Most people say it will be worse on the stores and dealer side, which is hard to believe. But there is no one in leadership that knows what the field needs and there is no one in leadership that supports the field. It is a very broken business right now.

This whole Paintzen/PPG Services program is a disaster and will continue to destroy business with large contractors. The new leaders are too stupid and too uninformed to realize this and continue to spout off that PPG isn't changing. That is pure ignorance and stupidity and sales will continue to drop and it's on these leaders' hands. If they knew what they were doing they would realize the mistake and sc-ap it. They don't know what they are doing!!! We seriously have to question what our leaders know....I fear it's not much!

incredibly poor leadership. NEVER have seen anything this bad. Now the head of stores sales want 30 calls a day logged from reps who are driving delivery vehicles and putting away stock because they cut all the workers that do that. PISS POOR planning and PISS POOR decision-making. None of these fools running the ship know what the field does or what they need. And they don't ask. THEY TELL!!!

Nothing new here. PPG is about the sleaziest company I’ve ever worked for. Got rid of the experienced people to cut salaries and have since hired every used car salesman and housewife trying to fill slots at rock bottom pay. Worst Management known to man from top to bottom and use threats and sleazy tactics to keep people in line. Can’t get out of their own way. RIP

PPG has to be the worst company out there! They do not care about anyone but themselves I feel horrible for the workers and their families. Sherwin Williams is totally different from its competitors I will not purchase anything that has to do with PPG everyone should follow!

Well said!!! You are absolutely right PPG only cares about their shareholders and making money more so than their employees! They care more about the big box stores and dealers than they do about the company owned stores which is where they make their money. Like you said we had 230 stores close due to the pandemic, do you really think they are going to open those locations back up?? Sure they might open a select few back up but I would not hold my breath. They saw this very difficult and dark time in our lives to do what they probably had planned anyway and lay people off. Meanwhile you have “Real” companies out there that are doing everything they can to keep paying their people even if the stores are closed and in some cases even paying them more for the work they are doing. And I saw one company paying up to twelve weeks of leave for parents who have to stay home because their children can not go to school. Meanwhile here at PPG we get pay cuts and the employees that did not get laid off have to keep coming into work with NO cleaning supplies, NO hand sanitizer, NO gloves, NO masks. Meanwhile all the big wigs at the top and share holders who make millions and millions of dollars are all sitting at home not worried about their jobs or where the next mortgage or rent payment is going to come from...Wake up everybody...PPG doesn’t care about us so why should we care about them.....Stay safe everyone and take care of yourself!!!
