Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Embellishing the truth

I believe there are many people who have found much better jobs after Allstate, but I have noticed that most of them embellish the truth and exaggerate things. I know a person who boasted that she got a great job, that her life is now much better after this chaos here, and than it turns out that after only two months she resigned from that job because the situation there is equally bad. I don’t want to say that this is a good company, but the people that leave here are so frustrated that they are very inclined to speak highly of anything other than Allstate. In the end, it turns out that it is difficult for workers almost everywhere.

Not true. I worked for Allstate for 10 years. I left about four years ago. I loved the company for the first seven, and then it became a heartless, soul-sucking nightmare. It was quite evident that leadership did not care about employees. I was able to find a job for better pay and quality of life. They want you to believe that the grass isn’t greener, which may be true if you stay in insurance. However, once you find a good company you’d be amazed at what you put up with.

Why would anyone stay a claim rep for 5 years or more? The company will take as much as they can. People who stay are acquiescent to this behavior. They know you either can’t leave due to location/family, lack of employers in that area, or medical benefits. Or you would have. . If you can leave, take a leap of faith. Stockholm syndrome guys. Youre living it. People stay in abusive relationships all day long because of fear of the unknown.

In any context, there is a worst case scenario. This company is at that place.

If you work in insurance and dealing with metrics, you probably aren't too happy. Claims is not a lifelong job if you want to be happy.

One other person said this as well, but I also left the insurance industry and I think that’s why things are so much better. If you go to any of the major companies, at the end if the day they’re going to be similar - they will hire as little and pay as little as they can, just doing the bare minimum to keep things running, so the employees are going to be overworked. They will probably pay you more then Allstate though.

It’s foolish to assume that because your friend left her job everyone is lying, though. That sounds like some sick inner justification of someone who is too afraid to leave this h–l h–e and see what’s out there. If someone takes the time to tell you what their life is like since they left, it probably means they think you deserve better and hope sharing their story might give you the push you need to get out.

Yes, it’s difficult in insurance especially claims but Allstate will pay you MUCH LESS to suffer through the grind.

I worked at two other major insurance companies and Allstate is the worst of the three. I’ve been here 7 years and every year seeing the best talent leave is sad. Being An adjuster I’m used to working 45-55 hours a week , but always having to look over your shoulder to make sure you’re not laid off even though you’re hitting your numbers is insane. They just keep telling us they’re going to hire more adjusters , but they don’t. They make it impossible with these new metrics and now the pay level bands suck because if you’re at the top end you won’t get a raise .

I came from a company that I thought was a bit harsh to join Allstate. Never in my wildest dreams did I think the culture I came from would far exceed Allstate. I’ve worked for several large corporations and by far Allstate’s culture has been the worst. What I learned is that you have to look at the entire company culture vs. team culture. The team I was on before I left my old job to come to Allstate was mediocre, but the culture of the overall company was good. At Allstate, the entire company culture is bad. I don’t believe people start out that way but I even found myself doing and saying things I would’ve never said in any other corporation. But if I didn’t, I’d just get beat up in the meeting (they would do it nicely with a smile on their face which was even worse in my opinion) and the. wouldn’t have any respect from others, which made my job harder. It was either I be cut throat and keep my job, or be nice and lose it. And the lies that were told were unbearable. Anyone with an ounce of integrity sticks out like a sore thumb at Allstate.

Allstate has a decent set of benefits (their health insurance isn't the greatest, but everything else is at our above average), and generally tolerate a lot from underperforming team members, making it a coushy job, which is why they have so many lifers.
