Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

How long will it take?

I know we are in the middle of an ongoing workforce reduction but there's got to be an end in sight, right? It's been going on for a while now, how much longer will it take to reach the desired headcount? I hate having to worry about possible layoffs every single day. It's not healthy.

I have been here for over twenty years and have seen over 50 FMP’s. Do get think it will ever stop as long as they have d––b as––s in charge

Worst company to work for...horrific!
Att treats it’s employees like trash! Lay you off if you’re over 45, male, making too much money, but claim reorg.

Donovan told us in 2015 that there would be 50% cuts in ATO by 2020, which would have been around 80K union and management. I'm betting that hasn't changed.. And good that Donovan was part of the 50%.

This is not really confined to T, almost anywhere that you are employed you can be replaced by a brother-in-law or a recent high school grad that will work for half, or someone younger or just get downsized because the owner is tired of seeing all that payroll money leave their account. T just does it every quarter, other places it can be any day any week any reason. A business owner is almost in the same situation, any day a lawsuit can arrive that puts them out of business.

I can’t remember when there wasn’t a threat of layoffs. Maybe the 90’s before we all started merging back together. Seems like it’s been nonstop for both union and management for the last 20 years. They could whittle this company down to two people, and the second person would still be looking over their shoulder every three months.

The company has too many workers. There is going to be layoffs until the company gets to the right amount of workers for the amount of work that needs to be done.

I remember the first round of surplus activity that scared me. It was fall of 1995. As the years rolled by and I survived one after another round, I became numb to the threat. I don't think this will ever end - they will always want to shed higher paid managers and acquire cheaper replacements. I'm out by EOY because of the healthcare change. Good luck to all who remain.

I’ll never understand why so many people continue to work at a place where they have to endure layoffs every month it seems. Trust me when I say the grass is greener. Get out. T doesn’t deserve you. It’s like being in an abusive relationship.

The problem is that there is no ideal number of employees for T. Because every time Stink and his gang of numbskulls make another bad move it will cost jobs.

So, given Stink's incompetence, greed, avarice, and arrogance, T will continue to shed employees until he is gone and actual professionals who know what they're doing are placed in charge.

Until then, the sl—r will continue ...

By design, it is easy to make the requirements so exhaustive that nobody would qualify and they are forced to find an H1B - happens everywhere.

As long as they can find cheaper labor it will continue. That's not just limited to offshoring and importing foreign workers. The cycle of replacing older, long-tenured and more expensive labor with cheap new hires will go on forever.

They ship the job out of the country. H1B means they ship the people in

“ H1b is not a replacement program. In fact a requirement is that there were no Americans with the required skill set to hire.”

That may be the way it’s supposed to work, but there seems to be a hidden line at the end.

“requirement is that there were no Americans with the required skill set to hire at half of the current cost.”

Please don’t act like you were born yesterday.

You must be new in town, LOL. No, there is no end to it. It has been going on ever since I can remember. Sometime it slows down for a while, and It moves around, hitting some areas harder than others at different times, but it never stops.

I transferred to Mobility from Legacy T about 10 years ago. Mobility was booming at the time. I thought I was in a safe place. Nobody there had ever heard the word "surplus." Then, about 5 years ago, it started – massive surpluses several times per year. You see, nowhere is safe. Even if you are in a "safe" place, it can change quickly.

You have to accept that this is a way of life at AT&T. If you cannot adapt to that mindset, then go ahead and take control yourself and start looking for employment elsewhere and leave before it hits you.

But please, try not to stress out about it. I can take a toll on your health.

until Amdocs and Tech Mahindra replaces all the employees with no direct reports! Amdocs and Tech M will keep the management happy (you know what it means!) so that they can replace the talented and experienced employees with fresh of the boat H1B foreigners. Until then the employees will be subject to humiliation and made to feel they are inferior so they develop low self-esteem!!
