I'm ashamed to still be working here. I feel really bad when people ask in surprise how come I still work here. I tried to find another job, but I still haven't had any success. My age is a big problem in looking for a new job and I am very aware that I should have left here a long time ago. I feel stuck and miserable.

I’m over 50 and found a good job immediately after being fired in 2018.
Good jobs are out there.
If you're old and and are trapped in a long career at Barnes & Nobles, you've made some pretty bad life choices.
Absolutely!

I don’t think anyone is working much at B&N these days . Stores are empty and one cashier at a store I visited today . However the store looked much cleaner and very little merchandise, so no need for employees !
Why BN screwed over over 2000 employees?
To save money since the employees don’t matter anyway.
And don’t ask your Mgrs about it .They’ll only LIE to you like they lied to the employees they fired. In Feb 2018, most Mgrs knew before Christmas what was going to happen. When rumors began they assured the employees they knew would be fired , that their positions were grandfathered in. They were safe. Lied to them.
And to just add my 2 cents, I'm with the first poster who begins telling you not to feel bad. I second that sentiment. What's more, you don't owe anybody beyond your immediate social circle ANY explanations about your working choices and you should answer in a way that the situation calls for. Only you can decide that. To the casual jerk who's only trying to be insulting, I always say - don't worry about it. But if you are talking about people that you care something about and who profess to care something about you, then you might want to say firmly what you've written here, that is you are looking and it's proving to be tougher that you thought. (Surely they'll understand that. If not, then you might want to re-evaluate that relationship.)
There are plenty of good places and unlike the horrible B&N management, they treat their employees much better.
Check out REI.
I've talked to a few people at REI, sounds like a great company that actually CARES about their employees! Unlike the worst mgt ever at B&N
Plenty of places are hiring. Doing well during the pandemic. Restaurants, Fast Food, grocery stores, cleaning companies.... BN isn't a better place than any of these. They’re considered Essential business , not downward spiraling retail stores.
Don't feel bad. The people who are asking you why you still work there should be the ones feeling bad. No one should make you feel bad for the honest work you do. Be happy and grateful to be employed. I like B&N. My kids and their friends were raised going to B&N and it had been a good educational resource for my family and community.
Many of us have taken a hit in our job status, job search and souring of the economy. Feel good to still have a job. It's unfortunate what has happened with B&N and it's good that you are looking for something new - but nobody should make you feel bad for working there right now. You just haven't found something worth giving up your current job for.
