Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Emergency time ?

I am seeing people talk about “emergency time “. What the heck is that? I’ve never heard of it, or been told this is some new benefit ? Some transparency ! Is this a benefit for all of us hourly employees or just for management? My kids have been sick and I’ve had several emergencies this year. How do I get this benefit ?

@wnz Not sure what area you are in but my area has had emergency time offered continuously from 2005 when I started to current. It is actually up to 64 hours a year now.

There had not been emergency time in years. Look up in the time Away Policy. Get your act together on Policy and managers.

I don't get why people are treating this emergency time as a new thing. Emergency time has been in each area I have been in since I started in 2003. From my knowledge it pre-dates Wilson's reign of terror as CEO and certainly pre-dates Shapiro's disastrous term at Allstate

Who thought of this program ? Must of been out of the goodness of ol Tom’s pea pickin heart.

More likely government said “sorry Tommy Boy, this is a requirement”. Or it’s something they did to try to salvage their rotten reputations on employee welfare.

In addition to everything that has been said already to use emergency hours you have to specifically ask to use it. Timekeeping is instructed not to offer it. It is one if those things where if you don't specifically ask for it then it is not applied and you will get a tardy or partial/full occurrence. They put the responsibility on using it totally on the employee. And they will not backdate apply it

I was without power for 4 days in February and they gave me the time without using PTO. I got lucky I guess.

If you need to take a PTO day but the day is full because too many people have requested off, you can use your protected time to take a PTO day anyway if you have an emergency, I’ve only had to use it once bc my daughter got sick but it was nice to be able to do so.

But the claim depart is being super toxic and assuming if you take fri or mons then you must be lying about having an emergency because you just don’t want to work so the leaders are giving you a hard time if you use your emergency time on one of those days

Emergency Time was a protected 8 hours per quarter (32 hours per year not to exceed 8 hours in any one quarter) that came out of your PTO bank that you could use in any way you wanted. It protected you against tardies and partial occurrences. It has since in 2021 been replaced by 64 hours protected from tardies and partial occurrences per year but not limited to quarters. You can blow it all in January if you so choose and are irresponsible but you have no protection then the rest of the year. The amounts do vary per department and some departments are not as generous giving much less than 64 hours based on their business needs and decisions. It is possible that there are some areas that do not offer this at all but I am not privy to that

It’s docked from normal PTO. You just call in and request to use PTO-protected. It won’t count as an occurrence.
