Thread regarding AIG (American Intl Group Inc.) layoffs

Welcome to AIG...

where you can out perform your team, and your department, while hearing from your manager that you don't deserve to gain more exposure to other areas of the company because you don't know enough about other areas of the company..

A white person gets a graduate degree, that person is ushered along into career advancement.

Anyone else gets a graduate degree, and you're told to keep working hard and to keep exceeding productivity despite the lack of growth, cost of living adjustments, raises, and exposure to higher quality contributors.

Actually to whoever posted the post about people not understanding simple maths, then they are clearly blind to what happens as a coloured person in most companies in UK and US.

Yes, I agree that there is also nepotism, but again we are not only talking about the very senior management but middle management which does not have representation. Clearly people who just deny this are not looking at thes statistics or simple Math!!!

The one post hit it spot on, you need to be connected to the most senior levels in upper management to go anywhere.

For those claiming racism, you just don’t have a clue these days or don’t know how to use data and simple math.

The fact of the matter is that unless you are connected to someone in the upper tier, you are limited in how far you can go, regardless of who or what you are.

I wish all delusional white men who think there is no discrimination happening would get reborn as a minority.

Wow, so not racist, some people are just lazy and not good.

That last post is not correct, so if a black lesson does not get promoted they are lazy and not good, but if a white person does not then it is just elite? So all employees of colour are lazy and not good and hence we have none at the top.

A lot of these posts about the company having a racist culture is false, some people are just lazy and not that good.

It is a culture that is elitist, entitled and strife with nepotism and has nothing to do with race, etc

I don't really understand how some people don't see it. Racism in the workplace isn't overtly throwing around prejudice terms. It's out-of-touch executives making selfish and privledged decisions. "Diverse" layers of management only providing opportunities to subordinates who match their respective race - not out of spite or hatred - but out of insecurity and tribalism. Making Black employees feel as if the company is bending over backwards for them when in reality its all talk, or insinuating the Asian employee doesn't deserve opportunities because "asians are smart anyway, so they don't have to work as hard as 'so and so'". B.S justifications stemming from racist undertones that guide insecure people to make biased decisions around promotion and advancement. While one type of person is seen as observant and patient, I'm seen as "shy". While one type of person is driven and educated, I'm seen as someone who "is naturally good at math" (yeah, I had a boss say despite the fact that I'm not that great at math).

I know what some may be thinking....great, good for you bro, people think you're good at math.. it must be terrible.

But these are the types of attitudes and stereotypes that subconsciously run through large organizations with AIG being a big culprit.

Yes AIG is no different than any other large company as well any other place in that the insulated elite get around the rules by having those of lower stature bear the full burden, full cost and full malpractice of these "enlightenments". remember the old saying about the rotten fish, it starts at the head.

The philosophy is to push diversity at the low pay grades so the high pay grades don't have to deal with it. Then be over the top preachy about it so no one could ever say you aren't a diverse company. High pay grades don't change, but interns and low pay grades with be mostly women or people of color. It's really obvious it you just look at the strategy and the make up of the company.

I disagree with a lot of these posts. I don't know how we can say there is no discrimination when there are very few people of colour at both middle management and senior management. This is the same for women. This is not just an AIG problem but a problem for the market hence the whole emphasis on this in the first place. The problem at the moment is that there is a lot of talk but not much real action.

I agree, the race stuff is nonsense and excuses. So they put a few non white people on the ELT, big deal if they do or not. Those people are so highly paid, the rest of the company is very diverse except at the very very top.

It definitely depends on your boss, but also on the organization as a whole. A good boss can be a shield against all this, because no one's going to go out on a limb to discriminate against you if you have a supportive boss. A prejudiced boss, on the other hand, fits right in and helps it all along.

AIG is so white. The parade RR around and let him host a diversity event every now and then. They think that is enough. No hiring of minorities in management jobs. No minorities in senior management.

Or maybe some people have racist managers and some don’t. Of course people are smart enough to try to disguise it so it’s hard to prove.

The only favoritism or whatever you want to label it is carried out by the executives. They are a close nit group of friends and colleagues at the top, predominately white guy or gal with very little color involved. Look at the org chart if you don't believe me.

Why do you think they promote equality so hard, non-stop, day after day. Those are the folks that do not want you to look their way. Aside from the execs, the rest of the company that I have seen is diverse and there is little advancement opportunity for you no matter what color you are.

Take a look at the org chart in Contact and tell me I am wrong. The only color there are the folks they have hired in the last year to try to cover their farce of equality.

This company sucks, but honestly I don't see much racism in it yet, at least on this matter, I don't see any difference from other companies I worked for. I've seen white and non-white id--ts at top level in AIG and other companies.

Please stop with this race stuff. I'm not white and don't have a graduate degree and have gotten multiple promotions and raises. Maybe you just do work that's not valued by management or you suck.
