Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I'm not sure I'll be able to continue like this

I think I would have been perfectly okay working from office had I not just spent a year working from home. I wouldn't have known how much the extra time lost in commute means, I wouldn't have known how much easier it is to concentrate without the constant buzz of other employees around me, and I wouldn't have known that I'd be so much more productive when I am not being micromanaged 24/7. But it happened and I do know those things and I'm no longer sure I can go back. The last few days have certainly proven that. I'm not sure yet what I'm going to do, but continuing like this will not be it.

@2mhi+1aVpi2GI Power walks are an excellent way for your supervisors to see you (their brains are too big to process the average tasks us worker bees are doing since they have big visions for our future, so we have to be visible)! It's only really effective you are wearing your ExxonMobil gear though (plus as mentioned by others on this forum, XOM gear makes you invisible to the loser virus). Also carry a lot of paper to make it look like you are working hard! The more paper the better! Finally, be sure to log into yammer to praise our benevolent leaders! They know whats best!

Quit your bellyaching and just suck it up. You get paid a lot of money and benefits to do your job. If you don’t want it I will take it and I would even enjoy the commute. What I would not enjoy is being around a bunch of complainers at work.

no reason to be miserable, just quit. Hope you can find one of those fully remote jobs that isn't going to force you into a 30-40% pay cut.

The fact that XOM is an oil company is the reason we're commuting back to the office. It's not that we work better together in person or whatever. I wish management would be honest about this.

You never calculated how much time you time lost during your commute each week prior to covid? That was one of the most important things I looked at when I chose where to live.

Also, throwing in headphones and listening to white noise when you’re in the office works wonders. Drowns out all the distractions caused by external noise. In case you were actually looking for a solution to the problems you just listed. Unfortunately don’t have any tips for dealing with micro managers.

Finding "mentors" helps! Get your nose all brown and you will be rewarded.

Sounds like you are trying to do actual work at the office. Stop it! You are going to get laid off doing that! What should you be doing instead? Yam! Get on Yammer and post about Integrity and Winning and Safety! Also dont forget those power walks! Grab a bunch of papers or folders and power walk around the floor so that all the managers can see you! So they can see you move in your XOM gear! Do this and you will become upper management in no time.
