Before every shift I have to mentally and emotionally prepare myself. Most of the time I think of calling out but I don’t because it’s a J-O-B. It wouldn’t be so bad if we actually had a support system we can rely on but that is just another one of the many issues we have working for Follett. At the end of the day, when I’ve reached beyond my limit of endurance I’m finding ways to decompress that aren’t healthy (I’ve gained 10 pounds in the last month.) Can anyone share what avenues they use that have helped?

I would say maybe go for a walk before or after work, try meditating or deep breathing, try writing some of the stuff down- it might help get your thoughts together, or you can just laugh at all the bad decisions Follett makes. You can try working on a resume, but I know that might add even more stress if you're not seeing any good jobs available (I've been looking every day for over a year and I have had no luck). Maybe try a new hobby or activity- even something like a jigsaw puzzle that will give you a little sense of accomplishment when you finish it. If you really need it too, you can always take Follett up on their offer to pay for your sessions with a shrink. Having someone to vent to might make you feel better.

I've tried exercise, hobbies, therapy, medicated therapy, none of it worked. Over time the constant strain brought out the worst in me. Personally I would still give the exercise a try; structure and planning for the future like a charity walk or even a 5k. Find something to build around that the job is merely between periods. Is that denial? No, but it beats substance abuse.
