Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Outdated boomer tactics

I wanted to post this to help out some of my boomer EM coworkers. Remember that this is 2021 so the following boomer scams dont work anymore:

  1. Showing up to work before your boss and leaving after your boss. Remember that keyboard keys are being monitored so managers know who is actually doing "work" now.
  1. Walking around the office looking stressed out to give people the illusion you are working on super important stuff. As mentioned in point one your keyboard is being monitored so managers know who is actually doing something.
  1. Inviting yourself to a bunch of meetings or scheduling a bunch of meetings. As before if they detect that you hardly type anything on your keyboard then the gig is up right?!?! Stop embarrassing yourself.
  1. Physically printing out every email or document from Sharepoint so that your desk looks "busy." This is the age of digitalization so managers know you are doing it as a scam to look productive.

If you continue to do the items mentioned above then dont be shocked and awed when you get PIPed in a few weeks. Especially if you are at a high CL level.

That is all...

I had a supervisor run a report on any changes made in the primary program we used, and sent it to all members of the team. We had to account for all gaps over 15 minutes over a time frame of several months. So instead of working in my project, I had to think back to what in the world I was doing on that specific day, and in that specific 15 minute increment. So, yes, they do monitor activity in different ways.

A lot of keystrokes could mean you are inefficient at your job. Smarter people would use fewer keystrokes to accomplish the same task.

I worked with a guy that had a big collection of training manuals in the huge white binders. When he retired he left them behind and when I opened some they were training manuals for Excel 97, Word 97, Windows 95 etc etc. He retired in 2018 so not sure what value all any of those outdated manuals provided.

What's funny is there was a guy I worked with (who retired a few years ago) that would actually print out emails and read the physical print outs instead of just reading in outlook. True story.

I don’t know where you work (or if you actually work for EM), but if you imagine that managers actually have the time to keep themselves informed on how many key strokes or mouse clicks each of their subordinates generate, you are deluding yourself. There are plenty of people who do nothing valuable and get payed a lot - and not just boomers, who have mostly retired, but most of the hi-pos, but they don’t have to use such tricks. They just “harvest” other people’s work and summarize it to the managers.

I was a fresh hire in the mid 90s and this definitely describes the work behavior of many from my era. I suspect EMIT started monitoring keyboards a few years ago and it's been a huge contributing factor to the layoff decisions.
