Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Are you generous with your knowledge?

How many of you are willing to share your knowledge gained through the years and years with the company along with your know-how with the newer employees? I'll admit, I haven't been too eager to show anybody new the ropes beyond the basics. At my age, any one of the new guys could be my replacement and I'm certainly not going to help them take my job.

It’s for your own survival now. Why share or help your colleagues who are competing with you to stay in EM? This very toxic culture will hurt the Company very badly. It “appears” that the Management is not aware that this will happen when they embarked on laying off employees by exploiting the performance-based criteria to avoid paying what is “due” to the employees when they were contributing to it’s growth. This will lead to selfishness and back-stabbing, etc. The friendly, helpful and warm working environment that makes us feel like one Family that used to be there, is no longer here. It’s tough to work for a Company when you don’t know whether your job is stable. We all, have commitments like raising a family and that need $$$$ and confidence that it will not stop suddenly. Hope the Management will stop this toxic culture and restore the faith of the employees. It may take a while but at least if they try, it will succeed.

Lay-off is not new to industry that did not do well and some do turn around. If this toxic EM culture continues, I do not see how the Company can become great again, survive, may be and be a mediocre one.

What knowledge? I just copy from old projects and P&IDs. But I don't share those, cause I need to keep my job.

People are moved around so much, with no consideration of their actual interests. I don't bother sharing much of my hard won knowledge since most people don't care - they're just waiting for their next post.

Your so called knowledge is not important, machines, monitoring, and technology can do it for far cheaper and faster. Kltc will do the mundane work. Gp’s/dp’s are copy paste of actual standards like ieee/api etc. nothing impressive additional to that. The company can reduce 50% of staff and run better than our competitors. Just saying...

Given the state of affairs at Imperial Oil, we end up sharing our knowledge, counsel and wealth of experience not with newcomers but rather the incompetent brown nosers that have been placed in position of power over and above us as our Managers or Supervisors. Corporate departments are a prime example where this rot prevails. Inexperienced and incompetant copy, paste, forward specialists have been promoted way in excess of their capabilities to Managerial positions since it is felt that these novices cannot do much damage with the massive technical support available in those they are leading.

What knowledge? Brown nosing and creating power point presentations is considered knowledge? This is why EM is cutting down their workforce. They finally figured it out that most workers arent worth anything. Truth hurts! I know!

Unfortunately, when you share knowledge with other XOM employees, they do not always give you credit and often times they will take your knowledge and pretend that it was their own "original" idea.

Passing along wisdom, ethics, and standards of business conduct is much more difficult and in an environment where there are "more mice in the cage than food", it is next to impossible to impart ethics and wisdom to less experienced employees especially managers.

Pretend to be an XOM lawyer and ask a question that you already know the answer to and you will find out which manager(s) and employees you can trust and those that are just bluffing their way through the career development system.

As an experienced hire the sh---y culture of not sharing is one of the worst things about Exxon and never experienced it to the same level anywhere else... the lack of collaboration was too much also.... and one of the reasons why I have a new job ( should probably never visit this forum but here I am :) y’all enjoy the horrible system and from this thread seems like that’s just the norm.

I'm willing to share but the younger folks are so arrogant, they never even ask.

My approach is to help others just enough to give an appearance of “collaboration.” Other than that, no fu----g way I’m going to help my competition (co-workers). Why would I? I will not deliberately sabatoge l, back-stab, or be a snake, but will I “withhold information?” Damn fu----g right I will. Don't blame me Exxon, you made this system!!!!

@llx+1aOuJ251 this is a sad and cynical way to see things.

Also, it’s unfortunate that it’s also a 100% accurate statement. The company preaches about “general interest mindset” but the reality is still that “taking credit” is far more important.

@mza+1aOuJ251 Nope. That’s where you are wrong, share only when it benefits you in the performance assessment displaying your “mentorship”. Or else, sit back and watch them fail, and this will set you up for good ranking.

Learn to play the game

Thats fine, some senior coworkers gotten lazy doing the same work over and over. And when something complex comes along they pass it to the "younger" (any age below them) gen. Good experience they say. They can keep doing the same boring day to day work for the paycheck. Gotta hold out until retirement

I figure I am getting paid to share my knowledge, so I do. It's never hurt me, because knowledge alone isn't going to let a shorter service employee get past me.

Op is obviously a troll trying to further divide workforce. I have never withheld knowledge and don’t know of anyone who has. Don’t fall for this garbage.

This is why I'm so happy we canned the annuitant contractor nonsense that went on for so long.

This is exactly how XOM ended up where we are. Selfish old guard concerned about themselves rather than the realizing that if the overall health of the company improved, there would be plenty of room for everyone.
