Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

The MBA Grim Reaper Cometh

For anyone in doubt of their future with ExxonMobil, just remember this CEO is the first in a long line who has their MBA. He talks like an MBA, thinks likes one and actions like one. The Low Carbon Solutions, “discussion about the CVX merger”, and Houston CSS Hub are all PR tactics someone from an MBA program would use. Also, the “value chain” word is so overused, I dont even know what that means anymore. Interest is in reducing costs as quickly as possible and that means employees….no other non-MBA would do that since they realize the value of chem e and or production e and the long term benefits. This CEO will always revert back to short them thinking of an MBA, either through PR efforts or employee reductions.

Ah the classic battle between engineers vs business majors. Aka autism vs bullshitters.

The real issue is the inmates run the asylum (engineers) rather than businessmen. Rockefeller would be rolling in his grave.

He’s also an electrical engineer. No offense to electrical engineers but CEO material? He is failing.

None of the EM MBAs do any real engineering work. Power point and Excel isnt engineering. Majority of these people can't do simple algebra anymore and most couldn't "engineer" their way out of a wet paper bag if their lives depended in it.

Having an MBA at EM is about like having been valedictorian in high school. No one knows nor cares. I have never seen an MBA be a factor in performance ratings or personal contributions. If someone needs it to educate themselves, fine. But common sense takes care of business requirements for most.

MBA's do well when a company and their industry is stable. With all the volatility and instability in energy now the MBAs dont know what to do. This is why Elon Musk doesnt hire MBAs. They ki-l innovation and creativity with their silly policies and procedures.

You do realize that most MBAs in this company have an undergraduate degree in engineering, right? And that many have done (or currently do) engineering work? Stop trying to create “us-vs-them” where it doesn’t need to exist.

The company recognized the threat of MBAs and has eliminated the education reimbursement program

In a company where the top 100 people are all engineers, you’re focusing on the fact that the guy at the top has an MBA?

I would argue having more people who understand business in leadership positions would be beneficial, instead of just having people with the right sponsors getting pulled through the talent pipeline to the top.

But hey, find the one thing that’s different from you and blame that in its entirety instead of the fact that we’re in a declining industry working for a company that is incredibly insular and has always been slow to react.
