Applying to another job internally

I have a question that is maybe stupid but It's been on my mind a lot lately and is something that I’m worried about so here It goes.
I’ve applied for another job within the company and I really hope I get it. I'm worried about what will happen if my manager finds out. Could he look at my application as a sort of treason and as my intention to move out of my current group? I’m afraid that if I don’t get the new job I will turn into a prime candidate to get the boot within my group. Has anyone had any similar experiences?

That is simply not true. These job posts are bs postings. They have already chosen who will be out in the position but have to run the ad for a specific amount of time.

Soooooo many ignorant sheep on this thread who don’t realize the company posts jobs externally! Like, HELLO, have you ever heard of LinkedIn?

I actually found my own job at EM posted there once. I was coming up on the end of my time in the role and knew I would be reassigned soon. LinkedIn notified me of a job posting at EM that was a good match for my experience, and whadaya know, it was the exact role I held at the time - I probably matched based on how many keywords my own profile shared with the job description. Only difference? They upgraded the job title, and almost certainly the CL range with it. I came thiiiiis close to applying via LinkedIn just to prove a point. I was WAY underpaid and underappreciated in that role, and they couldn’t find anyone internally to backfill me at my CL, so they had to go externally and dangle a “manager” title as a carrot. HA!

By the way, soon after that I did get backfilled by an external hire >20 years my senior who applied to the LinkedIn posting. The nature of the role didn’t change a bit after I moved on - just the title and (I assume) CL/pay.

Jumping rank? Sounds like the military. I could see a supervisor not liking it and even having a one on one with you about how he could help you get a different placement. To pip someone for just this action is poor leadership and way out of line. This would be a prime opportunity for a supervisor to do some good by helping you out. Helping people out is the most rewarding part of being a supervisor. The power stuff is way overrated.

It is exist, but it is not called in that way. It is called "position" move, but usually if you apply or you want to move to another position or place in the company, you need to be aware that your supervisor needs to hear about it first that anyone, because he will fire you and he can stop you to move to a different job position. People can be six or seven years in the department until your supervisor is moved to another position or he does not need you anymore. The fallacy that you are going to be rotate every two years dies not exist anymore.

To quote a senior executive with XTO a couple of years ago, “stop applying for jobs that have been posted. If we’ve posted the job, it means we’ve looked internally, and didn’t find qualified candidates.”

The only internal placement for jobs in XOM is called your supervisor. Anything else is based on trolls.

I think it really depends on the Manager. I moved into a position where one of my reports had already done that and it was disliked by his prior Manager. To me and my Manager, we thought it was good networking that he had 'owned' his own career and tried to identify opportunities. I have done it myself through my career and mostly it has been understood, I only had one Mgr that really didn't like it, but he got the boot recently anyway.

Interna job postings don’t exist. Did you apply on the external site? If so likely you won’t be considered.

For internal moves it depends on your supervisor. Some will hold it against you others not. Most have an unwritten rule to avoid doing what you did. It is ok to look for new roles but aways include your supervisor and work with them as an ally.

The company doesn’t have an internal job posting system. Even the companies that do have that system, an alert email is sent to the supervisor, should an employee apply to a new job. Unwritten rule is, if an employee has spent three years in a role, it’s OK to change the job (assuming that the
employee’s current role isn’t critical, in which case, the supervisor can always block the job transfer) and apply for positions by letting the supervisor know ahead of time.

Even in companies where the environment is friendly and the employee has an option to review internal job postings, the supervisor is always in the know about these activities.

I would be surprised if these are carried out in secrecy in a tightly controlled environment.

You should’ve talked to your boss but any sensible human will understand you wanting to progress. Especially if it’s something you really want. You can’t be faulted for going after a more favorable position. However, sensible and XOM management, doesn’t really go hand and hand

When you say "applied to another job internally" do you mean you networked with another manager in a different group? Pretty sure all transfers involve your current and future manager, so I'd be surprised if a new team was able to poach you without getting the sign-off from your current boss. Regardless, hope the new role works out for you.
