Life after Dell Layoff

To those worried about being laid off, just wanted to post an update about my experience.

I was laid off late September of 2020, and it was hurtful, I’m not going to lie. BUT I’m so glad it happened. Fast forward to present day (less than a year later), and I have a new job and am MUCH happier. I forgot what having a normal job feels like, and the feeling of having to “watch my back” is no longer there. Gone are the days of waking up at 2am in a panic wondering if my colleagues in India are working on my projects, and the constant other needless stressors that were part of my former role at Dell. I do not regret working there as I learned so much and would not be in my new role today if it weren’t for my experience at Dell, but I am so glad and thankful they laid me off!

Even with the severance and extra stimuli UI cash, it is a struggle financially if or when it happens, so my advice is SAVE and always prepare for the worst but always hope for the best. Be honest with yourself and if you’re not really happy at Dell, be proactive about finding a new opportunity. There are many out there now! The job market truly is on fire right now.

I met and worked with great people at Dell, but after one of the many reorgs things went downhill for me. I honestly don’t understand how leadership believes that constantly shuffling people around and forcing new teams and new managers at the drop of a hat is healthy for the company and their employees- but hey different strokes for different folks I guess. All I can say is how great it is to now be working with teams that truly support each other, because we aren’t worried about a random reorg or getting the axe despite great dedication and performances. I am busy but in a good way, and absolutely enjoy my new manager and teams. I am now in a “real” professional and collaborative environment, and it is so refreshing.

Just one other word of advice - YES the Tell Dell surveys can be used against you. Be very careful what you say.

I wasn't impacted in Sept, but I quit early this year. TBH, for what I was paid and what I was doing, Dell was a pretty good place. In my case, the only problem was I don't think the project I was working on going anywhere. Dell being big and has a lot of money is both a curse and a bless. If you are in the right positions, you could easily make 250k-300k total comp for not doing much here in the Bay Area. I'm talking about Engineering position. Management could make even a bit more. Because Dell has a lot of money they do projects without thinking, and I'm sure they will lay off the people once the project fails.

Always give high marks to your managers and to all colleagues who are well-connected and you will be successful or highly-successful. This is the simple recipe for success in a large company.

I’m in the same boat as OP. Was WFR’d first time in career last fall 2020– and have a wonderful new job at a company that is very high up the Global IT vendors and I love it. I loved my manager and colleagues at Dell— but was a pretty thankless ending after overachieving quota for them for 6 years straight. And I notice the “bad” managers seem to never be affected, and continue to rise in the ranks at Dell. That’s the mark of a bad company.

Guaranteed the tell Dell surveys are not anonymous. Any negative comment or rating will be used against you. My former jellyfish manager knew where negative comments and feedback came from. After 21 years I fed back that ELT was doing a poor job. Got laid off in September despite excellent ratings and feedback. Got to blow sunshine where it don't belong to keep your job folks.

Lol okay. Keep on lovin your managers. That’s exactly the advice Steve Jobs gave on his deathbed about life. #not ;-).

You supposedly are happy with your job at Dell but for some odd reason you’re sleuthing the Dell Layoff site probably because you’re concerned and you’re the type of person who needs to put others down to feel good about yourself. I’m sure you are Telling Dell the truth you’re a perfect fit for that cr---y culture. Enjoy!
