Now it turns out that the company has gone too far with layoffs. They laid off a lot more people than they really had to, so now Allstate is trying to get some people back, but not under the same conditions they had before.
I wonder how much worse conditions did they offer to people for getting their jobs back? Is the pay offered significantly lower than before?

Only come back as an independent contractor. This way you do not have to pay back the severance. Also charge them up the a$$ in hourly rates.
Our group got offered same pay, kept tenure and PTO, and they called us back after most of us were past the point of having to pay back any severance. They told us in September that this was just a numbers game to provide a rosier picture for the shareholders and they had every intention of bringing all of us back. All bit 2 of us bit the bullet and lived off the severance and PTO for 6-7 months and most of us also drew unemployment as well as our particular states allowed. Essentially we were being paid twice. Once by severance and once by our states. We knew we were coming back and actually made double the money for 6+ months. Not too shabby.
I was offered same job, same pay, same seniority... and know about a dozen other folks that were too
India better hurry up and get up to speed. This American company is never going to be successful hiring back those they laid off. They can’t get new folks either. Once the newbies figure out the game they are gone ! Allstate just wants some bandaids before India takes over. What a joke. Get out and don’t look back.
