Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Is it still safe to relocate?

Years ago if I was offered a promotion but I had to move cities for it I wouldn't have thought about it for long before accepting. Today, though, I can't make the decision. I've heard of people who were laid off less than a year after moving and I don't want to find myself in such position. Does this happen often?

I wouldn't trust a company farther than I could throw a brick.

It could be worse, for example:

Because of perceived job insecurity, you leave Intel and move to work at Company X
Intel then buys X and Intel management makes X worse
Intel management then fires you because, of course, it’s your fault
Then Intel sells X for a fraction of what it purchased X for

That scenario has happened! Bottom line — make sure you always have options.

Beware that if you move now with the intent of buying a house the real estate market is on fire everywhere and it is extremely difficult to buy when there are 15 offers above asking price and all contingencies waived for every house on the market.

The issue to me is all of the locations are not ideal for me. Unless your a Portland or Desert person ...these locations just do not excite me for the lifestyle I seek.

If the location works for your personal lifestyle than you should go ahead. The only thing to remember is all the jobs are in Hillsboro and Arizona.

It really depends on the situation. I wouldn't say it's the norm. Just do your due diligence and then after that it's a calculated risk, like anything else in life.

Worst case scenario you end up. Loving back after a year. Yea it's a hassle, but is it better than not even trying?
