If I take stress leave (and yes, it would be on the recommendation of my doctor) is there any way my manager or anybody else like HR can hold it against me down the line? Would it put a target on my back? Work has been affecting my physical and mental health and I am nearing my breaking point. Still, I don't want to take the much-needed stress leave just to lose my job once I'm back.

Any type of leave will put you on the radar for being laid off and let go with this company. But your health comes before any job. Period.
Take it or the alternative will impact your life much worse. Again, anything will place a target on your back. Place yourself first these people won’t!
Sorry Allstate beat you down. ANY medical leave is frowned upon. Don’t do it unless you have to or unless you want to be targeted for lay off next round.
If you take medical STD leave, no one needs to know it’s for stress. That’s between you and your docutor and the people who process the STD forms. I would not tell my manager it’s stress related. I would say it’s a medical issue. Which is true.
Take it, several people have in my department and nothing happened to them. Your physical and mental being is more important than anything else.
Anything can put a target on your back with this company.
Take it and look for new jobs while you are out.
