Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Another Town Hall, another 'slogan' rollout

Another day, another CEO slogan rollout. 20+ yr employee and we go through this with every change over. Leadership give these practiced impassioned speeches how THIS ONE is special, new, and life changing. So fire up the printing presses for all the cards and posters. Time to throw the Jim Hackett materials out with the Mark Fields stuff, then the Alan Mullally.....on and on.

Here’s the problem....and this is the problem with all the Detroit automakers: building a culture around one CEO is doomed to fail. Even if it’s a massively successful CEO like Alan. Eventually the CEO retires and the culture goes with him or her. Toyota is Toyota because the company has been centered around the Toyota Production System since time immemorial. There’s no flavor of the year slogan based on some exec’s ego. It’s a problem unique to American companies and will never change at Ford since the company ultimately centers around the Ford Family.

Here is the Bold Moves campaign from 2008. Complete with a mullet-sporting CEO, Mark Fields, saying "Change or die, baby. That's what it's all about"

@1cej+1a8rAiVi Absolutely right. Born a tick, live like a tick, die a tick. Ford has lost all direction and wants nothing more than to find the easiest way to make money with the least amount of effort. Born a Ford, raised to be a taker. Screw all your employers to line your pocket.

I've said this over and over again. At some point Ford would like to transition from a so called mobility company to a one that collects and sells information for profit derived from all forms of transportation. Ford + is just another same step in the transition.
Anyone watch the "Digital Thread" presentations?

@1vas+1a8rAiVi Case in point - Farley and Hackett received a combined $28.5 million in 2020 compensation. You have to ask if their contributions to the company exceeded that number. It's all a shell game.

Once upon a time we had a partnership culture - everyone partnering for the best outcome for the company.
Now we have a bonus culture
Everything is about getting the leadership their exorbitant bonuses and stock options.
Endless games on how to game the system to get even more compensation

@1csb+1a8rAiVi Been that way since Bill Jr has had an iron grip on power. He was a complete failure running the company but managed to draw an inside straight with Alan. Ever since then we've seen how that supposedly brilliant act of stepping down and handing the reins was nothing more than luck and timing.

Brilliant callback to Deming. Learning about his methods was by far the best part of my MBA. The irony is that despite Ford hiring MBAs from top programs they do nothing to implement the teachings that go on inside those programs. What's happening with Farley is the exact OPPOSITE of what Deming taught. All empty slogans yet absolutely nothing to fix the deep SYSTEMIC issues that lead to our quality failures launch after launch.

Well I guess since the CEO position is a revolving door of failure since Alan left, guess we have to just wait until JMs clock runs out. Then the next CEO will announce a NEW strategy and plan that will save Ford and the exec team will fall in line and crow how once again, this time is different. All the while, nobody should notice that our execs are essentially the people responsible for the mess.

It's all ego. Farley seems to be one of the most narcissistic automotive CEOs in recent history and that is saying a lot. Look at how much Ford PR has flooded the press lately about "good guy Jim" being a "car guy." Ask anyone who has ever worked with or for him and you'll know that's all a carefully orchestrated lie. The truth is Farley is a temperamental bully who has spent his entire Ford career scheming to get to the top. Now that he is there he is determined to build his perceived legacy to be the greatest CEO in company history. The empty sloganeering is just another monument to himself. The guy has never done anything if it's not in the best interest of Jim Farley and this is no different. Get ready for the cult of personality.

look up what Edwards Deming said about slogans. hint: "he says he doesn't like them."

https://deming.org/eliminate-slogans-exhortations-and-targets/

the execs will trumpet Who Moved My Cheese type of books, but they won't bother to read a book by an actual statistician with real experience. too boring, too old.

PRP 2018 guy here - After 33 years in PD, I truly miss these roll outs of the next process that will save the company. You do get cynical after listening to them year after year with no real change as a result.

Whoever is printing/lamininating the slogan cards must be doing well!

I would buy a cheap small electric with a sunroof as a second vehicle for around town driving. Not sure prices will drop low enough for me to bite as I am pretty frugal.

@teb+1a8rAiVi,

Millions of people live in apartments or live in areas with no garages. How will they be able to charge their vehicles? Just drive down any inner city street, everyone parks on the street. Perhaps, the electric vehicles will get cancelled. Reliable, cost effective, "fast" charging vehicles are a long ways off.

Already working on updating the BS BINGO cards for next week's meetings when all the word salad parrots start their updated brown noser statements. Lol, can we now classify a Town Halls as OTAs (Over the air updates for those that don't know what an OTA is)

Also with the electrification how are they going to handle the infrastructure if the demand or perhaps forced demand by the government, happens as they think it will. Our Electrical Grid is pretty fragile I mean Texas is a recent example but California is a regular example of that.
