Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Starting at the bottom

Is the reason some of us don’t move on is because we don’t want to start at the bottom again? For me, this is partially the case. I just had a interview at a great grocery chain known for excellent manager salary but would have to start as a FT associate first with no guarantee of a manager position. It would be a decent pay cut for me. Yet I worry everyday my store could be closed and I’ll be out of a job completely with Follett. There is this tension between staying with Follett with great hours and ok pay and going somewhere with a lot of potential but not immediately known whether that potential will materialize into a great position for the long term.

I called the manager that wanted to hire me and let him know I couldn’t take it. He was very professional and said if something changed to let him know right away. So refreshing!

The first day you don't have to account for another's time will be a relief. Maybe the pay cut at this job isn't worth it, but keep looking. Don't rule out a non-supervisory role. Starting quietly and being responsible for yourself will help recharge your batteries. You'll be better for it.

I've started at the bottom 3 times in my professional career.
It's s—s but as Kipling said...
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools...
Last time was from Follett - to save money (to make the Family stock worth more).
However, that decision cost the company money because the person that pushed for it didn't understand what the outsourcing cost would be. BUT he got a bonus and the family got screwed and the Family stock was not worth more...so sad.
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
Wise words, wise words.

I’m the original poster. The grocery chain called back and will hire me part time, telling me I will be full time really fast. The pay cut would be probably close to $4 or $5 an hour if I base my salary on a 40 hour work week. I don’t feel I can take that much of a pay cut right now. I’ve been a supervisor or manager for almost twenty years. It just s—s knowing if you want to go with a growing company you have to start so low. Feeling pretty dejected at this point.

Grab your life jacket and jump ship! The company has been getting such bad rap lately at a number of universities and schools. People who once worked here no longer recommend the company to buy books at and to go elsewhere. Once the family stepped away, the company went toxic and if it was a stock, it be junk. Haters gonna hate y’all

Get out of Follett as soon as you can. It does not deserve your talent or abilities, and it’s sinking like the Titanic.

Over the past year I’ve been reducing personal expenses to save more money per month. Paid off two credit cards with stimulus funds, got my house expenses lower by over 100.00 each month, eating out less, in order to help potentially shift to a lower paying but potentially better job in the long term.

You HAVE to think long term and that is just not there with Follett.

Build your emergency fund and earn money on a side hustle then bail as soon as possible.

I left just over a year ago and transitioning into the medical field. Loving every minute of not working at Follett

Personally, I wouldn't rely on Follett and like the previous post says, have faith in your abilities.
Good luck!

Have faith in your abilities - I started entry level when I left follett but moved up very quickly.
