Anyone watch the "Return to 10" WebEx? Return to work starting July, Any comments?

@4tsw+1a4qatIC My real world experience @ Ford says different. As LL6 I took on one or two FCG a year.
In my experience the outstanding FCGs all left Ford after 2-4 years. Many when they rolled off the FCG program and found out what most real jobs (non-FCG) jobs were like, and how difficult it was to get out of a bad job @ Ford.
The worst of breed FCGs are all still at Ford.
The middle of the road FCGs tend to last 5-7 years at Ford.

Now you must keep in mind that the Ford management and recruiting arm favors the worst of breed (those with interest primarily in managing projects and people). So the retention statistics spouted by HR are meaningless. Retain 100% of bad apples, Retain 0% of good apples.

Over time even the bad apples at Ford begin to believe they are geniuses as they are comparing themselves to the Ford standard, not the industry standard. Group think and willful blindness

Hmmm.... Not sure about that. $100k in any of the places you mentioned gets you a space under a viaduct at best. SE MI is great for millennials fresh out of school, especially for those in minority classes. For example SE MI has a large East Indian and Chinese population, so it's easy for a recent grad to assimilate with those groups. They get much more bang for the buck in cost of living gains and that helps carry the day, coupled with a much more reasonable work life balance. Don't take my word for it- do the research on "average work day" at Tesla or Google.

A recent grad out of a preferred engineering program or b-school like Ross can immediately picture him or herself buying a house in SI MI. The same cannot be said for Silicon Valley- anybody living there would be lucky to afford a decent house over a lifetime. Everybody predicted millennials jumping ship after 2 years plus, but I would wager my $$$ on the attrition data not supporting that. Now... If Ford completely screws up the return to work policy and mandates they be in the physical office over some arbitrary interval, all bets are off on them staying in place. That same $$$ I wagered above is on Ford doing just this.

Kids today aren’t afraid to change jobs and locations at the drop of a hat. It’s also a lot easier to find out what other companies are paying , cost of living , and entertainment venues in other parts of the country.

Detroit will never be San Francisco, southeast Michigan will never be Silicon Valley , and Ford will never be Apple or Google. Yet they think a sharp kid who can start off at 100K a year out west will jump at the chance to work here for half that because they will have a nice courtyard to sit in while they drink free coffee made fresh from the bean.

Rarely do companies survive when they shift their focus from their core competency and core business. Ford becoming a tech company is a fools errand. They do not have the culture or core competencies required to pull it off. The Ford “Leaders” are just posing.

Good point, however I don't think they would risk the millennials leaving Ford by forcing them to go into an office every day just to justify the rent.

It does bring up another good point, who will they get to rent places scattered all around Dearborn?

According the WebEx, the focus is on getting the Dearborn R&E center and the Train Station up and running first. She put off questions about the proposed upgrade of the Glass House. Wonder if they will just tear that down eventually. Not Google enough.

My impressions is that Ford wants out of the auto business at some point and eventually would like to be known as a tech company.

Not to fear eventually everyone will be required to come back to the office. The Ford family has too much $$$ tied up in ancillary businesses that depend on people being in offices in Metro Detroit.
You didn’t really think re-development of Metro Detroit properties was about altruism to economically depressed areas did you? It is all about the Benjamin’s.

You can be guaranteed that there is a plan being hatched to do this in a method that will encourage certain demographics to exit the workplace. What what they do - not what they say.

I've been back since Ford re-opened.

I'm not please that Ford Land is not making permeant desk seating accommodations for those of us so called essential workers who have to be in every day. We will be desk hopping along with the people who come in a few times a month.

I assume you mean return to ‘ office’. I never stopped working, intact have been working hard from home :)
