Thread regarding Macy's Inc. layoffs

Safety

With less people on deck do you feel safe? We have been getting hard with shoplifters and they are so brazen. No AP. I’m not talking about a teen taking something small, I mean thousands of dollars of merchandise. Do you get a lot of theft in your store?

Sad that Macy's has let security go downhill, I use to work with AP in several Macy's. I remember when there use to be 4-5 detectives working.
With the cuts, I always wonder why don't they just hire a security person for each floor and an additional one that can go back and forth between floors for support, while one manages the cameras. This would stop or at least deter many shoplifters. I'm using the last store I worked at as an example. It had 2 floors, with the 1st floor being the main one. Of course, each store is different but you get the idea. With that store having lost close to 700k-800k to theft, why not have the manpower to be able to cut that loss, even just cutting that by a third, the salary you pay for 4 security personnel would be justified.

AP here. Our department has been going sharply down hill for the past several years. Our teams have been drained to skeleton crews, much like every other department. Some stores even have none. Our policies change like pinwheels. Whichever way the wind blows, that's where the policy stands. Like others have said, thanks to covid, AP is no longer allowed, among MANY other things, to physically apprehend shoplifters. Macy's was one of the last corporations in the country to make this change, which they have long resisted despite other retailers making the switch years ago, but had no choice because of covid, and chose social distancing over profitability. Macy's AP has historically been superior, but was quickly turned into a joke. All I can say is, when you enact "dollar store" policies, you get "dollar store" results.

They can stop them, just not touch them.

I doubt Macy's has a rule about not stopping any shoplifters just because of covid., They did at the beginning of the pandemic but not now They may have restrictions but not just letting people walk off. Looking at reports, I see where in many locations they are catching shop lifters, so that proves that they are able to stop shoplifters. Maybe some security people would rather just do nothing, which many are good at.

Security has rule during Covid. They can’t go up to anyone shoplifting or not. They can be fired. So as for letting them rob. Wouldn’t you let them walk if they carried Covid ? It’s not worth the risk both ways

Our security team consist of two persons. One is brand new she got hired from the sales floor she was seasonal and she has zero experience in security. She is so tiny we wonder if she would even be able to stop anyone when time comes. They spend all day locked up in their office, we wonder if they are even awake. The only time we see them is at the end of the day when they decide to check employees bags haha.

Pfff what security. I mean, we have security but it seems they have not caught anyone in over a year. I know of one sales person that gave security a heads up to the only security person we have, about a shop lifter who was putting stuff by door to steal. The security person told sales person to give customer service to the shoplifter. The sales person did and the shoplifter grabbed armful of stuff and walked out, security person just stood there and let it happen. Why even have security if they are not doing their job. I agree, it would be better if they just hire people to wear the red jackets that say security on them. We also have a new security person who is barely 5 feet tall and weighs 80 lbs wet. Sales people wonder why they even got hired, we are thinking it was a favor because they have no experience and don't even have a degree.

We have zero security . Its so bad when gangs come in . They are groups of people that communicate by phones. Some load up bags of merchandise hide it . Another group takes it out of the store. Its all different races and they have one person that directs them. We found the bags full of merchandise hidden under long bath robes We removed it and watched the second group searching for it. They even sent in a third group of girls to try and find it.... no security...its a joke. A few days later a sales person was pepper sprayed in the face....still no security...they write the loss off to the insurance company....we are the fools trying to protect the c-ap....this is a true story...

Recently my fulfillment team was told that they need to have a pick rate of 90% or else they'll start getting in trouble the only thing is theft is so high depending on the department you're picking in there's a 50/50 chance your going to be able to find the things on your list

I wonder if it would help things if they got rid of their "detectives" and just had red coats at all of the exits at all times

We have no security now since someone quit a couple of months ago ! It’s very stressful on us the sales colleagues trying to watch for would be thieves, from open to close it’s all for the taking here at Macy’s.The word is out and they come daily. The joy is mostly gone from this job unfortunately.I will do my best but really it’s just to much !

Yes! I've always wondered if it was just my store but our security is so bad!! Since the pandemic more and more people have started to just walk out with things and recently whenever security does apprehend someone there have been a couple of cases of the personal physically assaulting them which in turn makes the person working in security quit shortly after as far as my personal safety we've already been told many times at the morning rallies that security isn't here to protect us they're here to protect the merchandise which they aren't even doing a good job at that
