Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Family Business

Anyone find it odd how some executives and upper managers have their kids in the company, with a few in the same org? Not going to name any names.

Talk about unconscious bias - I’m sure they’ll be ranked well.

Alexa play Fortunate Son -
“ Some folks are born silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, yeah...

It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one”

This is going on in Annandale also, upper managers kids being hired, the whole trailing spouse thing also, dragging the anchor from state to state special treatment for sure. Shut it down Darren, or move it.

Almost seems like under the right circumstances someone could sue and get a nice pay day. There has to be some sort of law in the books to protect against this BS. If EM was a private company then whatever but this is a public corporation. How can they get rid of an employee that has the qualifications and experience to protect someone's relative without consequences? If I was an investor I would be upset to hear they are cutting qualified workers to protect lazy relatives.

This is super common all over the oil and gas business. I've worked for 3 different oil companies and every one of them had relatives of some manager working a job they werent qualified for and didnt earn. It was just handed to them. Not sure how they have been able to get away with this in the oil business for so long. It has to be all the donations they've been giving politicians over the years. This would never happen at Bank Of America or Target.

Amazing isn’t it? And some can almost report directly to their parent.

@sgg+1a1pMIoW True. The trailing spouse is actually more protected, the higher up the leading spouse is.

If the father or mother was an executive or manager, their kid was given a free ride to at least management level. Job was always secure, mysteriously, somehow...must be nice! If the parent was not high up, then this special treatment was not as common for their kid.

Not to mention, some of those fortunate enough to have an executive mommy and daddy, really s— at their job. They fired knowledgeable people, for these inexperienced ones, to say the least.

Yeah it was considered "good judgement" in some circles but also considered "nepotism" for most.

Who can forget the exploration Vice President who threw a fit because his unqualified daughter wasn’t propped up by recruiting?

They reek entitlement.

I think it was considered good business and a benefit to employees. It was same at Mobil. I think the bigger driver was if you had a parent in the Oil and Gas business you would already have an appreciation for the business. For example, my father was a Mobil executive and I was hired by Exxon 1987. Now I'm getting ready to retire and the Company has treated my family well. Certainly, our share of ups and downs but that's just business.

And don’t forget all the dual career trailing spouses who somehow always get a pass.

I was once in a hiring discussion. The deciding factor was the one that was chosen had parents who worked for the company so “was more likely to be loyal to the company”

I kid not. Of course supervisor making the statement also had parents who worked for the company.

Yeah. I was frustrated when I was walking on campus and a high up manager who would rank me called out to my coworker who I would be ranked against, “How is your father? I remember when you were just a little child. Etc etc”

Somehow this person has always done well.
