Thread regarding National Oilwell Varco Inc. layoffs

For people who have left...

I am hesitant about leaving chemical engineering (project management, troubleshooting, etc). I love the type of job where I can be in the field and work on engineering problems with a diverse group of people. I also enjoy being able to be driven and lead things such as managing a project and managing field contractors. I am afraid if I go to say a tech co or EPC that I will be sitting at a desk all day, simulating and typing up documents, without being able to interface with people on a daily basis. I wood be staring at a clock all day.
This is a life crisis for me. Any advice? I can’t sit at a desk all day and succeed or be happy.

Now your talking dude! Great idea to get on here, a site that is for disgruntled employees and ask a very serious question about your future. Yes indeed, i know if i had a life crisis i would definitely be on here wanting suggestions about what to do or how to do it.

Sounds like you are happy with your current role. Doesnt make sense to leave.

Dude, what you are describing happens in EVERY industry... just pay attention to the job description/requirement and you’ll be fine. Also, make sure you know how to succinctly tell the recruiter/hiring manager what type of activities and roles motivate you, and which you’d rather keep to a minimum.
