Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Laid off and suddenly avoided by everyone

Why are those who have been laid off taboo in a sense that none of their soon-to-be former colleagues address them? Maybe they think it could bring bad luck to them or what? Maybe they think they will never be laid off and experience something similar?
I am in just such a situation and I feel horrible when I see my former very dear colleagues avoiding me as I work my last days in Centene. I see that there are others who have the same thing happening to them.

Not sure if you were aware but ummm...he passed away well over a year ago.....just saying

"People being let go are not garbage or under-performers. The decisions are strictly arbitrary whether you believe it or not. Absolutely any of you can be next. And those left? Have a great time doing the work of 2-3 people every minute of every day while Mr N takes his zillions and goes to Charlotte. For how long? Who knows...he’s an old man"

In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. – Martin Luther King Jr.
I am 50 years old and was let go after 5 years.I wish I had known better when I was young now it’s just regret. I thought this is my work family considering people to be my work besties but now I am just sitting thinking how to provide for my family. The fear of the unknown. I hope and pray no one has to go through this emotion!! Wishing everyone the best I don’t even know if prayers are answered and wishes come true!!!

I have one friend left from my former place of employment (prior to Centene). I had coworkers who unloaded their life stories, texted me daily, then once I left, I was persona non grata. It's like ...well F you too.
You do get to know people's real motives when you leave a position. Most are just grinding for the paycheck, and will forget you the next day.
I'm sorry you are being treated this way. Please realize this company is on a downward slide & you are probably lucky to get out with severance. Subsequent layoffs may not be that lucky. I think we all should plan our escapes, as our workloads are already intolerable! My managers have us running around on a State project because their bonuses are at stake. Like we should give a sht about their bonuses...?! Give those bonuses to those who are being let go... The math just does NOT add up!

They obfuscate who was let go. Leadership also says not to talk about it, making everyone afraid of insubordination. As one staying (for now) I wish I knew who was going so I could tell them they dodged a bullet and they'll be happier in the long run.

I felt the same way. They held meetings with the people left and threatened them not to contact anyone layed off or they could get in trouble. They don’t want anyone saying anything that could lead to a lawsuit or problems with people having different packages. It’s like first they stun you with the layoff and then they isolate you like you’re a cancer.

The people at your work say sorry or they miss you are legit good people.

The others that hide and afraid of you are scumbags. More so if you have been with the company a long time.

They want to stay away out of fear.

A company can run very well out of fear
A company can run very well without fear.

Most management does not have the ability to do the latter. That takes talent. They are task masters not managers.

Best to ignore it. You're not diseased, and if you read the posts the cuts were made arbitrarily.

Count your days, transfer your work, and most of all, transfer your mind to job search and You, Inc. Be cordial to all as you say your farewells. Everyone goes through this.

Well they better not get too comfortable because from what I hear, the next round is coming in May. No one is safe. Except for the top executives living in their ivory towers. It’s all good though, what goes around, comes around. I know from my census alone, just how much work they will have to do and what a horrible manager they have to deal with.

As someone who is still there and has to deal with the extreme level of stress in the environment, it's very simple. In my case I feel awkward, I dont want to just reach out to someone who is under a lot of stress and add more to the situation without meaning to. It's a very uncomfortable situation. Well the way it's looking people who stayed this round may be asked to leave soon as well.

Yes it is weird. They do not want to be infected with the garbage they are throwing out of the company. I am just counting the days left. Some people freaking out with the extra work.

So, you really get to know how people respond during a bad situation. And now I know what Piece of SHT some of the people I knew for years in the company. A few showed concerned to me. Others never even said anything to me. But I am not surprised. Most people look after themselves. And the last thing you want to be close to is someone thrown out of the company.

I am not upset. I expected this. Besides all the good people in the company I know have left.

Reminds me of that TV series 100 where the cast off the folks off the space station.

This is why I didn’t tell anyone. How quickly you can become persona non grata. Could also be a bit of a case of survivor’s guilt, but they shouldn’t get too comfortable with their perceived job security.

Maybe they feel guilty you are leaving and they aren’t. Either way it’s a weird behavior, and I have also read this from others.
