Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Laid off and not fired

It may sound arrogant to some, but I would really like to be laid off. I was hoping to get out of this company, I worked minimally and yet I didn’t get laid off. I’m tired and I need a little break, but I wouldn’t want to run out before I get my severance pay. If I just left, I’d give it to Allstate, and I don’t want that. I’m wondering what to do to get laid off and not get fired?

We haven’t been able to count on anything from this company for a long time, which has been widely commented on. So why would anyone count on the same severance, much less any severance this go around.

I heard last week, those of us that are caught up in the layoff are not getting a severance pkg this go around. I asked my manager and he said he had not heard that, and I truly believe he had not.

$7500 minus the 30-35% in taxes and deductions that most had taken from their severance does not leave much. Also in many states accepting severance disqualifies you from unemployment and spread out unemployment can end up being more in a lot of cases than the gutted severance. Unless you have a nice nest egg set up or living in 1880 that pre tax $7500 will not got far.

I don't think you are arrogant at all. I think your smart! If you have been with Allstate for years, being in the middle of a pandemic a huge severance check would help. If I'm laid off mine would be $7,500. Although I don't want to be laid off........... I think whether Allstate admits it or not, your division managers make the choices. They probably will cut the highest earners and also mix in some lower earners to avoid a lawsuit. I can't speak for other departments but luckily I'm my department everyone makes about the same amount so we really did eliminate the lowest performers but other departments had high earners laid off

Despite what the compulsive liars at the top said the layoffs had nothing to do with job performance. The assessments were just a legal ruse to cover their butts against age discrimination lawsuits. Aside from the region to zone restructuring (which in itself has proven to be a disaster) layoffs in 2020 were nothing more than a money chop in which higher tenured and paid employees were let go. They sprinkled in a few unfortunate newer tenured souls again to cover their butts.

As for 2021 there will be more layoffs and movement of entire departments overseas. Tom and those at the top have been quite open about it. Unless you find a great opportunity at this point I would stick it out and wait for the lay off. Especially if you are in a high targeted area such as claims. While there have been mixed messages about whether severance will be paid or not and while severance is not a guarantee there is a better chance than not that severance will be approved for the 2021 layoffs. However unless you have been with the company for 8 or more years and as highly taxed as the 2020 severance was it will not get you far so take that into consideration.

In short unless you have something great lined up to leave Allstate for I would continue to do just enough to be left alone, cruise along, and hope for the best in terms of layoff and severance. Some states like mine will even let you draw unemployment on top of the severance. Good luck and best to you!
