Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Is this going to become an annual thing?

Major layoffs once a year at least?

Are Care Coordinators at risk in the next round? It is so many across the board in every state

Further to the force ranking, I'm thinking that if there are budget cuts, more layoffs will take place as the lines will move on that spreadsheet. Another factor will be that certain people or areas will be kept more or less intact because of state, Federal, or NCQA evaluations, then axed.

@2uyq+19qL74Ol The force ranking system is why I'm glad I wound up in the second WellCare round. Having worked for a company acquired by GE Healthcare, I got an inside look at the organization during Omar Ishrak's and Jeff Immelt's time. Ruthless, heartless, and completely conformist would be a kind description of the people who thrived in that system. Many who weren't quite that way were damaged–clinically depressed. And I think we all know what happened with GE–multiple management mistakes leading to the implosion of a once-great company. Centene will be gone before that happens, though.

You can think your boss has your back all you want but at the end of the day, you can still get stabbed in the back. (I did). The posts mentioning lists and the planned aspect of this, it’s true - it’s two companies merging, they can’t keep everyone unfortunately. However, they could be more compassionate with how they’re dealing with this but, that’s something you can’t teach everyone. Especially when it’s a decision about doing what’s right vs. the almighty dollar. Just ask the CEO.

The annual layoff thing was introduced by GE years ago. After you cut redundant roles and streamline teams and corporate finances you then focus on making your talent pool stronger.

That starts with cutting based on performance. To improve the overall talent pool you layoff and manage out your lowest 5-10% each year. At some point you start chipping away at good performers because you’ve raised the bar every year.

The net result over a period of years is a very lean organization with high quality talent.

  • With low morale, lack of trust, and a dog eat dog mentality, but hey you’re lean now so...yay?

Former Centene exec here: I can confirm that you have been force ranked by your leader and you are a number on a spreadsheet after that, and the department budget will determine where above and below the line starts and ends.

Good with the boss? You’ll likely be ranked higher than someone who keeps to themselves. There’s a reason for the dog eat dog culture there. If you can look and see that there are a lot of people on your team, that there seems to be a lot of overlap, or someone even whispers about ‘what does that team actually do?’ , buckle up.

I have been gone for a few years and can tell you that layoffs are annual. There was going to be a layoff last year around this time, but they didn’t want the black mark for laying off at the beginning of a pandemic considering they were getting an infusion of cash at the time. That’s rumor from a former contact.

There will be layoffs in every quarter and It is not because of the bad earnings report. that's why companies acquire or merge with other companies, to reduce the redundant workforce and increase profits. Moreover, Yes, many high performers were let go, they are targeting high salaried employees in each team and not their performance.
In conclusion, Centene wants to increase profits and that is it!!!

"There are definitely more lay offs to come and they’ve had this all set up in phases,"

I have seen in other posts people saying that there are "lists" already made. I wonder if the lists are number of positions with an eye on who might be up for the next round of cuts or if the lists have names and it would be difficult to have a name taken off the list. (for departments that are just reducing numbers verses departments that might be completely eliminated)

Mixed feelings thinking it might not matter what one does in the next 6 months.

For those that have years of great reviews and no negative feed back from management, what else could be done to show "value"? I wish we all could think, lets stay the course, it has gotten us this far, but we have seen too many people that we feel are equal to us be pushed out throughout the years.

And yes, regardless if it is "annual" most big companies lay off a number of people every year and every year that same company will grow in size. It is a revolving door of people coming and going.

There are definitely more lay offs to come and they’ve had this all set up in phases, I’m sure. I agree that there are MANY low performing people still working. Is it fair? Nope. But then again, Centene isn’t fair. Some people know how to play the game and kiss _ss enough to somehow still have a job.

Poor performers did not get laid off. If you are in the circle you’re going to make it this time around. No saying how long you can be protected for.

They are not doing this to weed out poor performers, contrary to what the individual wrote previously. I've seen lots of high performers get laid off.

In this case it was not geared toward poor performers. I was laid off and was one of the top performers . meanwhile people who have consistently missed the goals set forth by our department are still there . No method.. just madness.

I’ve seen this happen every year. I’ve never received a poor review, and I was still let go. Now do I believe we are hand picked by our leadership, yes.

There have been annual layoffs for some time to weed out poor performers. With the never-ending M&A, larger waves like this will likely happen annually if the company continues to miss its performance goals, however, these seem to have hit some departments hard (marketing, legacy acquired companies) while other departments were spared (IT) so there is some method to their madness.
