Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Greener pastures

I'm a former employee who left voluntarily now working at a different company. I feel so bad for
yall and I hope it gets better. One of the best decisions I made was to leave. Sure I took a minor pay cut but I work less my lifestyle has improved and the company I work for not only makes but spends money. Keep an open mind.

@OP+19mutTqC You work lesser than in EM? I spent most of my working hours watching Netflix.. I’m sure I will not be able to find something as good as this.

This is OP I'm on lunch break right now so I can reply.

I work in Healthcare industry now. I'm an engineer by training but was able to land a job doing process engineering at a white collar health care company. I negotiated for my salary and make about 17% less, but my workload went from 55 hour weeks with on call and TA support to 45 hour weeks with no on call or TA support. So my time value is the same or more at my new company. I work from home now as well which is great since I save about 2 hours a day from traveling. I've been assessed already in my 6 months working here and I've been receiving great praise. They have no ranking system so no bs either your on track or off track. The group I work in has very high morale and the company I work for makes money. You see this company has had tight profit margins for decades because they are a nonprofit which has pushed them up operate effeciently without burning out folks or destroying morale. That type of philosophy has trickled down over the years to current leadership and to worker level. It's not all rosy there are some departments a little more difficult to work with but all in all very well ran.

If you are under 40 and vested you need to get out on your own terms if you can. Update your resume, apply apply apply, I over applied and recieved multiple offers but it took a couple months or so. From the time I initially applied to this job I have it took 3 months. Be patient and you will land it.

I'm going to reiterate something, XOM underpays their employees if you ask me. Based on the amount of hours, calls, TAs, b—s—, it's really not worth the pay. The benefits s— with no 401k match. And for those under 40 you will be extremely lucky if the pension is there by the time you hit 55. You make half your pension from 55 to 60. The pension benefits while young that you are entitled to even if the pension is terminated will be peanuts.

People really need to believe that most everywhere else is better than xom. When a company develops a culture that “we” (rolls eyes bc the ‘we’ is management and not other employees), are better than everyone else then the ground is set for these things you mention where it’s a cold environment, where they will kick out whoever they deem not to be the “best”, backstabbing, forced culture fit, culture over ability, group think... This arrogance will lead to a company downfall every time. This not only applies to companies but also on a personal level. If we ever begin to think we are better than others, watch the overconfidence lead to bad decisions and heartache. It’s a really bad culture at xom, maybe the worst of any large company.

Left Upstream 15 years back with 12 years service, CL25. Even then, It was a bad company, policy and management wise. Fortunately, I didn't take any paycheck hit and have been much happier and wealthier since. However, those 12 years of back stabbing, dehumanizing behavior, cliques and nepotism really left a bad taste that bothers me even today. It is a shame, EM could have been so much better and profitable ! The good news is it can still be, the bad news is the management will not change any meaningful way.

I am also former employee, got PIPed last July, left immediately, found a job in 2 weeks and been much happier. My field is process control/automation.

One important note for all looking for a job - you may get a new job tomorrow, may be after 6 weeks or may be even longer - DO NOT WORRY - be patient, make sure resume is as best as can be, and most of all, present a POSITIVE attitude when talking to people. Life at ExxonMobil makes everyone dull, negative, pessimistic and fearful. Be REBORN, you must sound energetic, positive and the attitude - "I CAN LEARN NEW THINGS FAST AND CONTRIBUTE FAST".

Also remember what happens in a game - you may score 0 goals in a hockey game during the first two periods and 3 goals in the last period. Or may be shut out in NFL in first half and score 4 touchdowns in the second. All you need is one job, when it will happen - can happen anytime, sooner, or a little later, will happen.

In the meantime, READ, take NEW ONLINE COURSES, sharpen skills to help finding a job. DELETE FACEBOOK and stop WASTING TIME ON TV AND FAKE NEWS.

Many jobs out there, you will find one. Technology growing rapidly - polymers, electric cars, batteries, plastic recycling - engineers are needed.
