Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Global Projects Forum Summary

What were your takeaways from the forum? Pretty strong message from the VP that he thinks Houston is still headcount heavy and to expect the NSI PIP off to continue this year now with people who last year were in the “good” bucket because the lower bucket has been emptied and needs refilling.

It’s “cold eyes reviews”

Although closed eyes would be apt.

Have to add that GP's EMIT advisors contribute heavily to the one size fits all.
Perhaps that allows some expensive tweaking of the tools - while still claiming Success.
The project possibly fails, but the tools are a Success.

Lots of closed-eyes reviews from generic advisor types- also expensive.
Always the same canned result from these.

It's needed... I remember when we ran the Cat 1 and 2s from EMPC and they were a disaster. It was the whole reason we carved out EMDC... And say what you want, that Org did some fine execution.

New GP s—s. Added too many groups that don't mesh well together (e.g. Guess what Dallas.... RC D/S projects and LS U/S projects aren't similar... And it's a huge pain trying to get tools that fit everything, or spending time explaining to the functions why we can't use their contract specific tools.

But now, it is neutered. No budget without begging, no real guidance or direction from Dallas on project outlook to even understand what to do about employee planning.

GP folks... There are great project positions at Amazon, Tesla, Google, etc... And they are hiring. Why wait for the ship to sink? Management will happily cut you loose with no control of your own eventually... Best to do it now while controlled..

It’s clear GP is still having an identity crisis- they talk a big game, fake smiles and optimism, but are waiting for UOG to “hire” them to execute work. And - BTW- UOG doesn’t want to hire them. Too costly, poor quality, too political.

Do we need a GP Org?

Interesting that you can't use the name of even a Global VP in this forum.
That's absurd.

Therefore, to be clear - a Scots guy, formerly country lead where EM is under graft investigation, is doing what he does best.
Misleading.

I can turn it into limerick if needed.

They didn't use the exact wording of "entitled brats", but the messaging was tone deft to what is motivating employees.

SLT had reverted to "Exxon has a lot of great upcoming projects" and "A career here is valuable and rewarding"... and said that we basically should be grateful to be employed here because of this. However, they fail to recognize that the majority of employees under 40 no longer feel there is legit job security. And when Dallas refuses to be transparent about pay flexibility (timeline of 401k reinstatement), honest about the MLRP program (at 8% PIP, your pension is effectively worthless given your odds of being fired before retirement), and won't share employee level outlooks of America's vs BTC (show us that you're not planning on firing us)... Then GP SLT can talk up the Corp as much as they want, and no one cares.

Leadership told GP employees they were entitled brats during the forum?!

Funny thing - that he and the current LCM in that country both have Glasgow smiles.
Small world, ilk the same harns.

Everyone should have an updated resume and testing the job market, even if you’re not NSI , the best time to look for a job is when you already have one

Well that sounds brutally honest unlike UIS. Management of UIS stated that they weren’t dumping people in small groups to create larger teams for layoff purposes. Yes, they did!! If your team suddenly starts to get a little crowded, look out! 90% of that team will be released. Liars, liars pants on fire!!

My takeaways from the GP Town Hall:

  • XOM feels we are way overpaid (no timeline for 401k match reinstatement)
  • XOM feels we are overstaffed, and looking to cause greater attrition (no job security, no commitment to non-aggressive MLRPs, need to make way for low cost center growth)
  • XOM feels majority of employee base is similar to sheep vs mouth-service of "best of best" (no interest in sharing anything on employee outlooks, inability/unwillingness to share specifics, etc.)
  • XOM has a great portfolio... But no idea if/when we will execute... Company is entirely driven by outside forces

I've actually loved my time at Exxon. However, my belief is that my probability of being laid off or fired is almost entirely outside my control and pretty high. For folks below 40... I no longer see the long term value of being an employee here.

Loved it. Goes to show we were right all along. The management will double down with NSI PIP.

I particularly enjoyed the commentary around employees being entitled brats who need to be put back in their place. Let them eat cake! Pretty rich coming from management who continues to get all their nice stock bonuses and such.
