Thread regarding VMware layoffs

Is there a future here?

I’m not sure anymore. After the last round of layoffs I’ve been question on whether to stick it out or jump ship. When layoffs are the only solution that can be found to solve the issues this company has, it becomes obvious how inept upper management truly is.

I would jump ship! I meant, layoffs occur with every company that I have been with, but, most are based on a performance or economic shifts. After a few years at VMWare, the company ritualistically layoff employees once a year regardless of the economy and the layoff is not based on performance (there are no performance reviews, at least with my team) I've seen top performers been laid off for what it seems, personal likeness (the click). There is no loyalty to you as an employee, and as mentioned in other threads, there is a favoritism to hire, retain and/or promote people from South East Asia (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh) it's a form of reverse racism.

So, while the paycheck is coming in, I will be actively looking for a company that does not see layoff's as a ritual to appease wall street and a company the has race diversity (from individual contributors to the leadership) both of these are lacking with VMWare.

Depends what role or function you are in. The way I look at it is, new CEO comes in, things might start to change 6 months later. For now, align to the 5 product franchises if you are in the field for longevity. If you are support crew or administrative role, take a step back and assess your own dept or role's relevancy to the business, and decide if there's a risk. As always, keep your eyes and ears peeled internally so you don't get too many surprises.

I agree with @fjy, every tech company has an expiry date. For all the big tech companies (HP, IBM, etc) it was companies like VMWare that hurt their business. For VMWare, it’s the beast of a tech called “the cloud” but it took such a gigantic shift to take out VMWare. If the cloud didn’t exist then I think VMWare would be riding high today.

As far as the racism, I wouldn’t call it that per se but rather the engineering departments are really producing ground breaking features - just add-ons or sustaining code. No talented engineer wants this, just the desperate ones looking to sustain their H1B’s or needs a unearned promotional boost

Vmware is a dead company for quite a while. Look, FB and VMware were founded nearly around similar time. Vmware chose the path of racism, intimidation, and Cisco culture. It became a sinking ship so fast.

I left 2 years ago when I saw the racism and favoritism in promoting new fresh grad Indians and alienate and exclude others. NSBU in particular.

Every successful technology company follows a trajectory that goes from birth to old age, just like a human being. VMware is well into its twilight years.

There are some paychecks remaining for those who stick around. That is about it.
