Who decides to return

The pandemic has brought many new ideas and ways of living into focus. Perhaps companies who do not adapt to this new reality may be doomed. There is a lot more global opportunities now for people living anywhere they want. Force people to commute and sit in an office all day, and you may invite a big brain drain. Is it companies management who will make these decisions, or have employees been empowered?

I’d like to hear someone reconcile the notion of requiring ICs to be present in the physical office where most of their management sits to offshoring the same IC’s to offices 10,000 miles away from where the management (which avoids getting offshored) sits.

I completely agree the biggest abusers of wasted travel are the managers. Then they have the gall to tell the ICs there is no money in the budget for training.

Technicians and others required to be on-site should now fall into a permanent higher status of "Essential on-site support", and there should be bigger perks that come with that. Higher salaries, free meals, reimbursed commute, free personal trainer, free on-site medical care, and some type of child care support.

We’ve also shown that about 90% of the travel we do isn’t necessary, even for power-ons. I bet we’ve saved tons of money with very little productivity hit. But managers use unnecessary travel to make noise and self-promote. So I see it coming back very fast

If Pat brings his old school mentality back from Andy Grove, then hell yes, you'll have to be in office. Under Andy, if you weren't in office by a specified time, you were handed demerits. Enough demerits and you got a "talking to" by your manager. Intel went soft under Otellini, because management didn't want to compete on pay. So it went hard on the WLB and H1B friendly policies. That's why when FB and other newer tech companies decided to give more generous parental leave benefits, Intel eventually moved toward more generous policies, not necessarily matching FB, but made the gap smaller. But the pay is still peanuts relative to FAANG because Intel doesn't not compete for the same talent coming out of the top tech unis. Sandra's deflection to the question about how Intel would retain talent despite a ongoing brain drain was telling. If Pat is serious about bringing Intel back from its current trajectory into the toilet, he must cull the current MCM in large quantities. I could sense the unease in the current EVPs in announcing the return of Pat.

Yes, i already see the old mentality back- “people must be in the office to collaborate effectively” Intel learned nothing from covid and doesn’t seem to understand that remote work is now a benefit that they must offer to stay competitive with other companies and what they have to offer an employee.

Very interesting point, I agree this will happen, managers will force people back, and the best ones will leave. Curious to see this play out.
