Experienced Hires

I have heard that EM rarely hires not experienced workers. There might some truth to that and I'm sure that some here could site examples. But, just FYI, let me tell you of a counter example.

I was hired by EM after 20 years working for several oil companies (Getty Oil, Amoco, BP, Arco, Vaster, etc.) I was 49 years old when they hired me. I worked until 65 when took the retired package. I know 2 other engineers that were also experienced hires all retiring from EM in their mid 60's. Myself, as well as the other two engineers, were never that high up in EM; we were just workers (who knew how to get the job done at the field level). We were never supervisors or managers. We were never apart of any EM bonus program. Just a pay check every two weeks (the pay was really good).

I think different departments might have different approaches to experienced hires. My department (EMDC Drilling) seemed good about hiring those that could fill a long-term need. For EM, I ran SS trees in deep water from an installation vessel instead a rig; no one (I know) in EM had that type of experienced when I was hired. I did that for EM for the better part of 15 years. My experience with EM was very good indeed.

Perhaps I was fortunate.

Hmm. Interesting. I was always paid once a month with EMDC

OP, have you ever found out how your paycheck was compared to those who weren't experienced hires but did the same job and performed the same as you did?

Hired into Upstream 2007 with 22 years experience. Only worked expat assignments, still going strong. I just focus on my work and ignore everything else. Works for me. Looks like a technical talent shortage coming up yet again. Def works for me.

My impression is your first ranking is what matters. If you rank high the opportunities perpetuate it. If you rank low or middle again that is where you are likely to stay.

Sounds like you filled a highly specialized niche for which EM had a need for, for may years. That's fortunate. Those niche jobs are great - as long as the company needs them.

it is no luck. EMDC - Drilling was a good place to work when drilling was king.

Experienced hires typically are ranked very poorly. The whole "we expected more out of you versus you experience" BS. You should know the OIMS system inside and out with your YOE.

I think Chemicals, particularly Technology in BTEC has hired quite a few outside people the past decade or so.

20 year experienced hire, now 10+ years @XOM. Still here. Top quintile. Thriving. Haven't yet drank the Kool-aid.

You were lucky. As an experienced hire, they would fire you this time, no matter your real performance is.
