Revamped performance assessment process

The "revamp" of the performance assessment process has been anything but positive. All it did was replace the buckets with flowery names. Taking away the stipulation that you could generally only fall ~20 points year-to-year has taken away any sense of stability. One bad manager and you're gone, despite HR assuring you that doesn't happen.

While I don't think any of us are entitled to a full career here, it feels like hunger games now more than ever before. I don't feel empowered to buy a house, start a family, any big life move - the financial stress of taking on an expense like that with your income potentially taken away is too much. Searching for jobs now and planning on gtfo Houston.

Well as usual, there’s a double down. The reason why performance assessment is not well received - has nothing to do with the design or so it’s claimed by senior mgmt. instead, it’s because the supervisors ain’t having the right conversations. the sh– note from HR just tells you that there’s no humility at DW and his fellow Gods in Dallas.

And yet in the sessions I was in I had to remind people that was not this year over and over.

The PiP move last year, potentially illegal (still to be determined), was just a sign.

@1mso+19ZJfwVI I'm not @xxa, but that sounds awful. Even more now than ever, the most influential/loudest supervisors will be the only ones to get their horses in the race.

May the odds be ever in your favor.

As part of the new system, prior rank discussions are off limits in the ranking meetings.

When faced with the need to reduce the workforce, other majors like Chevron declare a layoff and provide a severance.

In 2020, ExxonMobil chose to rig its performance assessment system at the last minute to fire thousands of employees due to “performance” in order to avoid paying severance. Arrogant blame shifting to save a few bucks. It was a terrible decision in the long run because surviving employees will remember it and know it could happen to them one day.

Most employees now look at the company a bit differently...it looks a bit more callous and ruthless than ever before. Senior management probably doesn’t care one way or the other, but this is the situation they have now.

Seriously, what do you want from a performance assessment process? No one likes them. At any company. No one thinks they are fair or infallible. At any company.

I once worked for a company where probably 75% of the people were in the top performance bucket. What happened when a senior position became available? The hiring manager’s unqualified golf buddy got it. Is that fair? Nope. Did I feel better because I got a pat on the back and a gold star on my performance review. Also nope.

The performance assessment process is the worst part of any job. Get over it.

Isn’t the lack of stability common outside of EM regardless? Many places will just fire you on the spot. If you have marketable skills I wouldn’t delay life goals like kids and house. Just don’t go overboard on the budget.

“One bad manager and you’re gone”

Raises hand. Very bad time to have the worst boss of my career. Apparently no one else in the room questioned a 60 RGP drop, and instead were delighted that a goat was thrown on the slab that wasn’t their goat being sacrificed. Horrible way to treat long time employees, but hey, he probably got a bigger bonus for being a good team player, after all, how can one expect him to make it on only $350K a year?
