Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Were there really 'good old days?'

I haven't been here long but there isn't a day I don't regret taking this job when I did (I had another offer, chose this instead.) I keep hearing some of the people I work with talk about the 'good old days' and I simply can't imagine a time when Allstate was a good place to work. Was there really such a time or is this some kind of a mass delusion?

As you can see, some people here are woolgathering like they're still working at Sears. The good old days aren't working so well at Sears either.

These ARE the good ole' days! Don't waste them, find happiness and peace. If not at Allstate then elsewhere. You only have one crack at life, don't waste it.

Completely agree with everything you said. Company picnics on company time, fully paid for, with time to get to know people outside of work. When people retired, a big deal was made of it - office meeting, cake, people talked about their memories with the guest of honor, the family would be invited. I’ve worked in several different parts of the country and it was that sense of family no matter where you went. It all changed when we went public and had to cater to the shareholders.

The old days were great! I was first hired in 1986. Back then employees were like family. The kick off meetings were catered at places like the Hilton, the Garden City Hotel, the Marriott, etc. People dressed to the nine's and the CEO, managers and employees all gathered together. No one was "above" anyone else. Beautiful brunches were served. The speeches were something to listen to. They gave a true vision for the future of the company. I'd look around at all the fanfare and think to myself, "Wow, I can't believe I work for this company." I was proud to say I worked for Allstate. Then came 1995...and we broke from Sears and went public. Slowly but surely the company picnics went away, the elaborate Christmas parties died down. It was becoming an "eat at your desk, there's work to be done" mentality from the MCM's. The higher ups separated themselves from the underlings. It was becoming US against THEM. I was so grateful to get laid-off in 2019. BEST thing that could've happened. My office in Uniondale had become so toxic. Bad management and managers. Sadly, they are still there.
