Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Confusion about leaving IBM and going to RedHat

I am currently in final stage of accepting an offer at Redhat. Does it make sense to go to Redhat from IBM? As of now, IBM and Redhat are two separate entities, but do you see any future problems with this new job as a software developer?

I was totally tired of IBM, changing strategy every quarter, and trying something new which is not required at all.

Now my fear is going to redhat, will there be layoff stress as IBM is a parent company? I am definitely going to ask 25% hike, otherwise won't accept the offer. I know staying in IBM I won't be able to get such hike in the next few years for sure.

So please your advice would be much appreciated. I am just afraid of going to IBM'S child company

RH is good but there are many that have left. They see the IBM sh– train coming. Ask for more but be ready to leave within 18 months.

I've been working in both camps for the last year. In my section at least, there is far more professionalism in Red Hat than IBM, which is a madhouse, in comparison. So go with Red Hat but get out before IBM messes it up, as it does with every acquisition.

I left IBM a year ago for a FAANG and I recently started helping with recruiting. From what I hear, Red Hat staff have a reputation of being low quality but heavily pampered.

Red Hat's a great opportunity. Take it. Like others have said, it looks great on a resume (vs. IBM) and they are the main focus of IBM's cash investment at the moment - meaning even if it'll fail, it's going to go thru a good deal of funding for the meantime. Ask for 50%.

Redhat is dead meat, they just don't know it yet. When they jettisoned Centos, ubuntu got the upper hand.

Look at it this way. If you go to RedHat, it looks extremely good on your resume. Much better than IBM. With some solid development work done at RedHat and described on your resume, you should be able to get Linux-focused organizations lining up to interview you.
