Thread regarding Allstate Corp. layoffs

Why are people nervous about layoffs?

I think we can all agree that it's as bad as it can get here. It wasn't always like that but it is now and I think we've all accepted it. So what's the worst thing that can happen if any of us are laid off? A couple of months of vacation time courtesy of severance while we look for a new job. When we land it, can it really be worse than this place is right now? Not likely. Basically, there's no way to go but up.

At this point, I’m hoping for a layoff! I’m sick of the garbage. I’m sick of being on a team that is constantly told to “load balance”... where’s our load balayage? I’m sick of not being able to promote , but the company is allowing people to demote themselves because it saves them money. But I’m sitting here with the numbers to promote and can’t. Lay me off, I’m ready!

Core employees of the offices closing were told in January that they would be let go with severance, blah, blah, blah. Yesterday tptb announced that no, they would not be laid off but would be required to find a new position. The positions that they were offered are as customer service reps. Basically call center work and hours. There will be no severance package offered if they choose not to accept those positions, but they were welcome to quit if they didn't like it.

Severance is never a guarantee and there is even word that only 5+ year employees will be offered severance in 2021. I personally know of 2 rounds of layoffs not too long ago where there was no severance at all and no 60 day notices to prepare. To think it is a guarantee to get a sack of money when laid off is foolish. Also it shouldn't be a "vacation time" as enthusiastic and well intended true professionals make finding a good long term job an 8 hour a day job in itself unless if course you want to settle for entry level service or the food and hospitality industry.
