Automakers embrace electric vehicles but what about buyers

Excerpt from https://thebusinessjournal.com/automakers-embrace-electric-vehicles-but-what-about-buyers/

"Opinion polls show that a substantial majority of Americans are aligned with Bock. An EV might be on their shopping list if it cost less, if more charging stations existed and if a wider variety of models were available. In other words, the time isn’t right.

It all adds up to a significant risk for the largest automakers.

Most of them are staking their futures on the notion that consumers will soon be ready to buy vehicles that run not on the internal combustion engines that have powered cars and trucks for more than a century but on electricity stored in a battery pack.

General Motors, Ford and Volkswagen plan to spend a combined $77 billion developing global electric vehicles over the next five years (..)

For the automakers, the risk is as hazardous as it is simple: What if American consumers reject electric vehicles for many years to come?

Companies would have no choice but to discount them and hope, in the meantime, that their profits from gas vehicles would still cover their costs — at least until large proportions of buyers gravitated toward EVs.

If they don’t, the financial blow could be heavy. For now, EVs make up less than 2% of U.S. new-vehicle sales and about 3% worldwide."

The other risk I see is why buyers would buy Ford EVs, instead of other brands, after the federal rebates expire?

There is still hope! We just have to get a grass roots campaign stating that electric vehicles are racist and they will be cancelled!

Complain, try to wish it away, that ship has sailed.
Worldwide the auto makers, supported by governments, have made a commitment to built a majority of BEV's by 2030. Capitalism has failed here, consumers will not have a choice. Those old enough to member the Beta vs VHS debate understand this. VHS was not the better technology but it was pushed exclusively until the public accepted it.
BEV's will be the only type of vehicle available to lease or buy. A niche market in 10 years will be to build custom ICE powered vehicles. By that time however the cost of the vehicle and gas will be cost prohibitive for most consumers.

Simply put: Never an EV for me.

What will the millions of customers do that live in apartments, live in areas with no garages, or other areas where charging a vehicle over night is not an option? I have not heard much about battery tech that can charge in a few minutes. (without other issues) There is still major infrastructure needed to charge the batteries. I can't tell you how many times I drove to/from work and had to stop to buy gas.. that one stop in my commute was a pain. Also, all of the pumps were being used. I can't imagine stopping to charge a battery. Hybrids and back up internal combustion engine vehicles yeah.. maybe, but 100% electric everywhere is still further in the future.
