Thread regarding Riverbed Technology Inc. layoffs

This company has totally changed me

As for knowledge, everything I learned, I learned thanks to my own effort and commitment, but I also learned too much about people, how to deal with the worst of them who are always ready to take your credit and stab you in the back. I became too cautious and distrustful. I don’t like the type of person that I've become.

Every leader loves to take credit for their people’s work. That’s how it works all the way up and down the chain. But when you move into a real company, that’s the real test if you can walk that talk. I am a grease man on my team and it’s too bad my vertical doesn’t recognize it so when I am gone, I’m taking all that talent with me and will replicate it in the next place. This place doesn’t reward the real people doing the hard work. The leaders are a bunch of chumps just looking for a payday.

I just feel bad for those returning back to riverbed. You’d think they moved on, got better, or work at a better place but they haven’t. I guess desperation is a commonality between these people and riverbed.

@1esm - My belief is politicking and backstabbing is more the norm than the exception. Regardless if you’re some hip startup or some old crusty bank, when money is involved there will be (proverbial) “blood”. I believe politics is built into corporate culture because leaders hire other leaders that are “like them”. This automatically creates the perception of a glass ceiling and, given any advancement opportunities, people will behave in manners that only benefits themselves. Sadly, it’s things like this that can’t be measured and rendering any HR or Diversity/Inclusion team useless.

This type of behavior is not universal in the real world. Only in organizations that are filled with people that are starved for achievements and imagination. In successful orgs, there is enough credit to go around.
