Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Debating my options

For those who have jumped ship last year how difficult was it to find another job? I am thinking of leaving but with the way things are going I’m not sure if it’s a good idea. Of course I want to make sure that I have a job first, but in the event that it is not possible (store closure, etc.) was it fairly easy to land a job? Did anyone find a job outside of our industry?

Get your resume done and make sure to use keywords for what you’re looking at. You might need to tailor your resume for different positions. And most importantly, use LinkedIn and start networking on that site. Keep your LinkedIn profile up to date and match your job description to your resume. People are using LI way more frequently nowadays. Pay for the Premium and start taking the LinkedIn classes for anything that interests you.

The hardest part for me, in terms of a new job, is answering the question "what do you want to do?" I honestly haven't the SLIGHTEST clue. The college bookstore business is the only thing I've ever done - got in my junior year of high school and have been doing it ever since (21 years, 22 this Summer). Anything that might peak my interest requires skills or a certification I don't have, so I would need to go back to school and I don't have the money to invest in that at this point (I have a lot of personal debt I'm trying to clear out). Granted I don't work for Follett anymore but ever since Covid happened I've been rethinking my stay in retail life, especially since despite my importance to the store (i.e. textbooks) I'm not considered an "essential employee", given that I was furloughed (twice).

I would recommend working with a career counselor to get your resume updated ASAP. The economy is going to open soon & your opportunity to change careers will be there.
