Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Don't be too eager to quit

Several people I know who did are now desperate to find their way back.

The name "Redhat4eva" says it all. This poor child still thinks Red Hat exists. Just wait, kid. You will be assimilated. Signed, Old Geezer.

This is ridiculous! I know managers in Austin begging ex-employees to come back because they cannot find the skills. Experienced employees with marketable skills can do 100 times better in other companies.

It’s a tough job market and with remote work starting to drive down tech salaries the offers coming across my plate aren’t anything to write home about, but they’re all more than IBM and include a balance of base, bonus, and EQUITY which is where IBM simply cannot keep up.

HR is too busy processing people out of the company...

Wow, thanks for explaining the original post Sherlock.

Those that think HR is posting here are hypocritical, and dûmb. You say IBM doesn't care about employees yet you think they care to troll post on this site?

HR does NOT post on this site you old geezers. Just quit already please, for the sake of the company, so us new hires with actual talent, and some skills can take over.

I left IBM years ago. Did I second guess my decision - yes. After a couple of years, I applied for another job at IBM - a few in fact. I never got invited to interview. Despite being a previous high achiever at IBM they ignored me - I figured it was personal. Best thing really because I have regularly overachieved competing against IBM, have a great job and have a front row seat to watch the IBM implosion!

Soooo tired (and bored) of people saying HR is to blame for posts they don’t like. Stop gas-lighting. Maybe someone genuinely posted that question looking for a supportive community and rational answers. You have no proof someone is from HR, corporate, media, a manager, an ex-IBMER or anything else. Let people do what they came here for - to try to get support.

"find their way back"... LOL
This makes it look like IBM is like the Army, people with PTSD can't stand civilian life and wants to come back to doing legalized murder.

I would never quit my job before having an alternate source of income lined up - not even when the job is at this schit company. However, since I DO work for IBM, I am ALWAYS looking for a job. Tomorrow is March 15 - traditional "bonus day." Not one peep about that this year, but they're talking about all this useless nonsense they want to add to checkpoint goals such as "social media footprint" along with the usual "Think40" stuff, which apparently now is unofficially Think80 since COVID WFH rules apparently exposed all of the useless middle and upper level management who had all that extra free time to rack up 100+ hours of learning.

Question to the HR manager who posted this topic - do you really think any of us are going to apply ourselves anymore to go above and beyond for a company who doesn't give a rats azz about us? Here's an idea for ya....phuque off.

Bruh... if you're the hr or manager why don't you do something about developer pay instead of spreading this bs and giving us "pmr" platitude when asked.

That might actually convince someone to stay

After IBM, I went to a SF startup as an engineer. Literally, IBM is NOT on the radar of my colleagues. When Ginny stepped down, no one heard about it and no one cared.

HR has a lot of difficulty imagining themselves as a reader of this discussion board,

  1. e. one truly affected by IBM HR practices... it is easy for "us readers/true participants" (=receiver of RA or similar HR malpractice) to blame poor execs, but HR & HR Legal is still the true hatchet engine of the specific actions (age discrimination, etc)

Hence their attempts to "participate" on this discussion board are sadly clumsy.

Hey IBM HR
Why don't you start a post with "IBM HR here": and see if you can actually post something of interest/value to this community.

I'd put money that you can't

Most innovators go to start ups. High risk, high reward. Most superb talent who are a little less risky land at successful start up’s. The problem IBM has is they cannot compete with the successful start up’s. My neighbor just got his Masters from Stanford. He got offers from several start up’s, and from Google, Amazon, and Facebook. He joined Amazon as the rewards were almost 1.5 x IBM. Base pay was close, but signing bonus, stock options, and yearly bonus based on growth were the difference makers. Folks who want to come back, just don’t realize where the market has moved to. NOTE when IBM is replacing you with collar hires, it’s time to jump

NO ONE I know is desperate, or even interested. Is IBM so clueless they think they can c-ap all over employees and force them out the door, and they will just sit by the window like a puppy waiting to be let back in? Maybe 30 years ago people begged to get into IBM but now it's just one short stop in a professional's career. AK should think about why IBM has to lower their standards so far to find employees. No college? No problem! Step right up and take a job that took your predecessor a degree and years of experience to master, but do it in the next week. That's the new IBM!

If you are young and have any skills at all, run. IBM is the devil and does not care about any employee.

In any case, network with people outside of IBM.
Once we accept the fact that most people will work for multiple companies throughout a career, then we can get used to looking at the bigger picture and plan our next career moves.

Where do I see my career in 1, 5, 10, 20 years? How to thrive in the industry for n more years?

It depends on where you are, where I live there are tech jobs galore, its much greener, every person I know that left IBM via RA or on their own is making more money, less stress, grey clouds gone and exciting work.

As one person mentioned to me, its like the boiling frog story, you don't realize how much its changed from years ago until you leave and go somewhere else and that somewhere else reminds you of IBM 15-20 years ago as far as morale, culture, fun.

Most who leave on their own are amazed how IBM will offer you a much higher salary and RSUs as you are walking out the door. Something they should have offered before, but now its too late.
