Ford goes to gov’t for help in US investments

After Ford led outsourcing efforts to replace US suppliers at the cost of jobs and failed investments, now no one trusts Ford as a partner. Have to run to gov’t for support. Surprise to anyone? Actions have consequences.

From AutoNews: Ford Motor Co.’s top executive said the U.S. must begin building batteries for the coming wave of electric vehicles in order to avoid supply disruptions like the semiconductor shortage now shutting American auto factories.

“We need to bring large-scale battery production to the U.S., and we’ll be talking to the government about” that, CEO Jim Farley said Wednesday at the Wolfe Research Auto Conference. “We can’t go through what we’re doing with chips right now with Taiwan. It’s just too important.

Ev's are here to stay. Everyone took notice when Tesla Model 3 led all other luxury vehicles in sales globally. Tesla had 30 percent growth in 2020 despite the pandemic. Owners of Tesla's are generally extremely satisfied.

We are kind of insulated here in Michigan but change is real.

Who the fk wants EV’s.....? You people are delusional. Is this all you got after pricing trucks at 40-80K? Too many people are outa jobs and like obumer said they are not coming back... pair that with printing gazillions of dollars to keep fake economy going and you have a disaster in the making. Me thinks the used car market will explode look at Cuba!!!

Generally speaking, a sound corporation would have insured they have a good battery sourcing plan BEFORE announcing to the world that we are all in on EVs.
Maybe Tesla/Panasonic can sell us batteries?
Just kidding, those are made in the US and will be too expensive and too reliable for our Ford purchasing requirements.

If Ford agreed to pay more for chips this would go differently:

The governors of Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Kansas, South Carolina, Alabama and Missouri asked Biden in a letter to join foreign governments in urging semiconductor and wafer companies to expand production and "temporarily reallocate a modest portion of their current production to auto-grade wafer production."

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat who led the effort to get other governors to sign, said she was urging Biden "to do everything in his power and to leave no stone unturned to protect auto jobs throughout the supply chain at risk because of this .

I'd start with LL2' thru LL6's and start evaluating everyone of them in the company. Set a modest goal of 50% and perhaps even higher than that and have one big purge.

Agreed! So why would a supplier make a large commitment and investment if Ford won’t? Can’t think of a worse scenario or partner. No wonder Farley is look to the government for subsidies.

I think Ford won't make the investment because of risk. There is risk in assuming Ford will be among the biggest mass producers of EVs. There is also risk in assuming that Ford's batteries will remain among the best.
