Don't count on severance

Somebody mentioned this in one of the other posts and I think it bears repeating. If you are laid off, the company is not obligated to pay you severance. There's no law that requires it. The company can give it and usually does to avoid any future litigation on other grounds (age discrimination, for example) but it's in no way bound to do so. So take that in consideration when planning for your future - especially considering that many companies have already stopped giving out severance and are citing COVID-19 losses as a reason.

If they can PIP you with subsequent termination for reasons just or not so that you are off their payroll immediately, hard to dispute and subsequent severance is not given. There is a special place for those who play to this tactic. Loyalty doesn’t exist and those employee surveys for betterment are a joke. Better off without TR!

The company is getting “smarter” particularly if you’re near retirement age. They want to wait you out until you get sick of the place and you file your papers.

Are they still talking about lay offs? I thought they liked ruining people’s holiday season with the good news around thanksgiving. I mean why wouldn’t lay people off in December ( when basically nobody is hiring or decision makers are in their vacation home).
