Thread regarding Norfolk Southern Corp. layoffs

Too many bosses, very few leaders

I’m not sure if I know of any company that has more bosses per employee than NS has?
It really got ridiculous. However, perhaps it would not be such a problem, if among all these bosses there is someone with a vision, that is, someone who is a leader, and not someone who does their job half-heartedly and disinterestedly, worrying only about their own job.

"By years end this will all be ending so I don't care".

What makes you think that? As when Clean Sheet team visited and closed 50% of our terminal over the last two years, they stated that this is just a continuation of previous "cost cutting" measures. Get ready for "Plan 2022" aka more closures, sell offs and layoffs.

The ns micro manages the train masters, who in turn micro manages the crews, this just shows things down. Let me knock hand brakes of from the ground or reach over equipment, let me ride cars in tracks that are "close clearance" for the first time since they were built a hundred years ago. The rules slow us down, the fear of getting untroubled if you don't follow then slows you down. Watching me make me follow ever rule to the bet of my ability adding time to the job. We are men, let us do our jobs like a man. I haven't needed a babysitter since I was 10. Get rid of crew watching and rules. A company rule book that literally is thicker than a dictionary, and vaguely worded to benefit their stance as it changes. You much bureaucracy and red tape.

By years end this will all be ending so I don't care. Ill take the layoff and look for something else but I know for a fact none of us are doing anything to help. Could care less. They have sh– on so many good people in the name of share holders that before long there won't be much left. They are running it into the ground

Well all I'll say is if you go into management you deserve everything you get. I can't respect a grown man who does not defend himself. They all just say yes yes yes. Out of fear of losing their job. Well there are plenty of management jobs out there. They choose to be treated this way. Sorry I don't feel bad for them....

Seeing supervision where I am at being sent out at all hours just about everyday and night. They are actually trying to protect what they have but are not backed up apparently by higher up. As well always seems that any supervisor that wants to work together for the furtherance of their point gets beaten up and either turned to the bad side to survive. That is if they aren't fired or moved all over creation.
When they gave up being contract they signed their demise.

It there's one thing we all have in common, MGT and Craft, its that no one really seems to care anymore. Oh sure, we'll all do JUST enough to get by but that's all folks.... You have dispatchers in Atlanta wondering why 13000 foot of train wont build air right away after going into emergency, in 15 degree cold up North mind you! Thats just one example. Its mind boggling. Absolute WORST company I've ever worked for.

I always love the famous “Trainmaster is coming out to assist” speech from dispatch or Yardmaster......

Assist with what- a ride in their vehicle? Because you know they are neither qualified or motivated to actually help you with your work!

I actually had a Trainmaster once tell me he was a qualified Conductor because he went to some 2 week training seminar they give the new management guys. Funny right?

Eh, any of them that do care generally get beaten into the ground and worn down so hard that it isnt worth caring anymore. Remember, these guys don't have union protection, and upper management reminds them everyday how easy it is to send em packing.

NS acted on their beliefs that have been drilled into their supervision that hourly people are a problem, Treat them as such. I’ve never worked for a company that did this. This was going on long before PSR.
