I am going to hire the best lawyer in the city and go after CVE hard if they do not include a stuffed Husky dog in my package. Because I never even got one yet. Jerks.

If you didn't increase your expenses with your earnings, $2,000/month is doable

You qualify for EI once you have used up your severance. (e.g., you are given 1 year severance. You will get EI after that 1 year)

Another round of cuts for Cenovus. Sadly, they seem to have one every 2 years. People have been walking on pins and needles for the last decade. Remember, severance is a gift, not a right. A lot of companies don’t even give them out, so count your blessings.

Now who in the world is pumping up the "Please talk to lawyers" counts? Looks like the not only HR is monitoring this thread, also the lawyer firms are also. They told all their staff to give negative feed back to any suggestion lawyers are a bad idea.

Believe me, I'd love for everybody to put the screws to CVE and get huge severances, but the lawyers are the only ones that come out ahead. Certainly doesn't hurt to talk to one, but they are in business to make money, not help you. Remember, Alex is a lawyer.

Yes I agree it’s totally worth going to a lawyer. A friend of mine got about 5x more than his last offer.

Your bosses don't care about you, the markets don't care about you, the economy doesn't care about you.

Only insofar as they can extract adequate surplus from your labour; once that objective is achieved you're rendered superfluous and thrown on the sc-ap heap. Doesn't matter who the CEO is. The market is king and the market is ruthless.

If its reasonable just accept and move on, gonna be hard to show you need more than about a month for each year

Talk to a lawyer. Best money I ever spent.

Looks like HR is monitoring this thread. Absolutely talk to a lawyer if severance is anything less than you would expect for your role/position. In this economy, with unemployment at 11% and the pandemic on top of that, severances should be very generous.

Not worth it talking to lawyer. CVE farms out the lawyering to some other firm so between your lawyer and the CVE contract lawyer dragging it out with letter back and forth to increase their billable hours mostly the CVE lawyers do this, no CVE oversight), you could be waiting for a year at least to settle on anything, and it won't be for much more unless you've got a really really good case.

Also, as a tactic, CVE puts many of the law firms on retainer (it's not just CVE that does this), so it may be hard to find one in Calgary that won't have a conflict of interest.

I know several people that have talked to lawyers after layoffs and they all get the same advice. Not worth the fight, you could end go with less. Oil and gas pays above average severance as is.

Hopefully every one of the 2150 that get layed off will visit a lawyer (free for 30 minute consultation) and ask for more compensation because of a global pandemic, very high 11% plus unemployment numbers in Alberta and the fact that they will never find comparable jobs and wages ever again.
