Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why does this company insist on deciding my career and next moves?

Was told last month I’m moving positions and the new role is literally nothing that I asked for. My boss said it’ll be a good stepping stone for me. b—s—, they are just trying to fill in roles of people that got put on leave.

The whole life long career motto is out the window so telling me it’ll be good for me 10 years down the line is irrelevant.

That’s not healthy. It’s means they do. It value what you want. Get out. This does not happen other places unless you can’t do a role.

ID: @5dws+192k3xIr Are you a supervisor? You should understand that people will do best at the jobs for which they have knowledge, training and interest. If you assign people at random without taking this into account, you are setting them and the company up for failure. Of course it is not a democracy, but the company will not do well if you rule by fear like a brutal dictatorship. But management does not care anyway, they are incompetent, arrogant and just milking it for as long as they can.

It's a company, not a democracy. Company's always decide on your career and next moves. I can't believe you even asked the question. Start your own company if you can't handle direction or your boss telling you your assignments.

I used to hate the surprise moves, so I left— but the grass isn’t always greener posting for jobs at other companies. It’s harder to get different experiences elsewhere.

Planning for employee moves takes minimal time for the masses. Basically just plug and play without a lot of thought. The exception is high flyers who have a whole team dedicated to ensuring their success and next moves.

Accept it or perhaps it’s not a good fit and you should look for another job outside the Company so I was told. It’s going to be interesting when they start consolidating groups and stacking people together in order to lease some of the buildings to outside companies. Didn’t they say it was going to be a Super Restructure???? Stay tuned....

The company hardly ever hires experienced hires. And when they do, unfortunately they dont care about their previously experience. Their performance hinges on how quickly they can drink the kool-aid.

Back when everyone used to say XOM doesn't do layoffs, I remember seeing the company move employees into positions they knew the employee would not like. It was an easy way to get them to quit without having to fire them.

Amen to the “you should never stop looking for the next job”.

This company’s internal staffing model is so broken that a fully qualified employee who is up for a move can lose out on a role to an external experienced hire simply because the hiring process moves exponentially faster than internal moves.

Could be the company sees future potential in you and wants you to be on a development plan that exposes you to different roles, experiences, etc. Happens to everyone that advances at faster pace than typical guidelines.

Or, could be that current managers see you as worthless and want to shuffle you off to someone else.

You know the truth.

In my 40.5 years with Exxon, then ExxonMobil, I had so many different jobs. Worked all over Houston, then Spring at the end.
I just always told myself I was lucky to have a job when I was told I was changing positions.

Sometimes it was worse, then sometimes it was better.

Hope things work out for you.

This company is so dated and slow moving in the way it approaches things. We give too many people too much money just to "manage moves and performance".

If the company wants to save money, gut the performance system and do away with the middle managers spending huge amounts of their time discussing moves employee moves. Move to what just about every other large company does and interview for your next job..

That is too bad, your ‘whole life long career motto is out the window’.

I hate that when that happens.

Go along with the change or get another job.

I was once told by a crusty old toolpusher “....you should never stop looking for the next job”.

Good luck!
